Well from some of the gtx 260 reviews I've read, even with my setup I should be getting higher frame rates even at 1280x1024. I should be getting 100fps easy in UT3.

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/148...ion/index.html

There is definitely something wrong somewhere, as I tried playing UT3 with everything maxed out and the highest I got was 62 FPS using Fraps under Vista 64. I've tried with various settings v-sync on/off/application which made no difference. Even my 8800gts 640mb managed 65fps with everything maxed out. I.m going to try reseating the card and install different drivers. See if that makes any difference.

Other games like Crysis & Cod4 seem to work ok, I get 79fps in Cod4 with everything maxed out with 4xAA which is about right according to this review.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/graphi...rce-GTX-260/p8

I'm wondering if Fraps is working properly. Is there any other benchmark utils. I tried NV tray, but it doesn't seem to work under Vista x64.

UT3 is ok now, I disabled framerate smoothing and now I'm getting 100fps, but it still drops down to 38fps when playing the map Sanctuary. Seems like a very demanding map.

You're cpu-limited.

Did you look at their test system? They're running a 3Ghz Quad core with 8Mb Cache. You're running a 2.4Ghz Dual core with 2Mb Cache.

As we've said a few times now, you are CPU limited.

Well according to these reviews a faster cpu or quad core doesn't make much difference to most games when using resolutions above 1024x768, and a E6300 oc to 2450mhz should be fast enough for most games.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/cpu-sc...e-processors/3

2,4,8,16 cores ... right now it seems that after 2 cores it does not seem to matter that much how many cores you have in your PC when it comes to gaming. Our recent Intel Skultrail review (8 logical CPU cores) proved that already. The biggest bang for your buck is a faster Core 2 Duo dual-core processors preferably with a higher clock frequency. Next in line are the cheaper quad-core processors. But after four cores guys, I tell you, with the pending Intel Nehalem release going 6, 8 and maybe even more cores, we are bound to run into an issue. More transistors means more costly products. What really needs to go up is that processors frequency.

Well, the only game on that list that shows results like that is COD4. The rest all benefit greatly from having a faster CPU. Also, a 2.4Ghz E6300 is going to be noticeably slower than a Q6600 due to the large difference in cache (8Mb vs 2Mb)... plus, those tests were run with an 8800 Ultra, which is quite a bit slower than a GTX 260 216, so their system has more of a GPU bottleneck.

Its also worth pointing out that those are average frame rates. If their Q9770 CPU achieves 100fps average in STALKER and the X2 4850E gets 64fps average, that doesn't mean the games are both buttery smooth. That means the X2 system is probably crawling in the mid 20s when its heavily CPU bound, and tops out in the 80s when its not. The other system probably rarely drops below 60. That's what I experienced with STALKER when I went from an X2 @ 2.5Ghz to an E6750 @ 3.6Ghz.

I mostly agree with you here, however some games do get massive performance improvements from multiple cores, and Far Cry 2 is one of these games.

I'm still on a dual core myself because there aren't any multi-threaded games worth upgrading for as of right now. I decided against a quad core about 1 1/2 years ago due to this, and the games still haven't come. I do think they are on their way though and the socket 775 platform has come to its end so now I generally recommend getting a highly overclockable quad core to last a while so you don't need to spend an arm and a leg on one when the multi-core games hit.

This. Some games are more designed for quads and Farcry 2 is one of them. I have a GTX 260 and I completely max the game in DX10 and get an average of 50-60 fps.

Well would over clocking my Intel E6300 cpu to 3000mhz make much difference or should I buy a quad Q6700 instead. Also could my PSU have any effect on the FPS as It's only 520w.

Most of the games I've played are smooth, I'm just not seeing much of a difference compared to my 8800gts. I've just played HL2 with everything maxed out at 1280 with 8xaa and was getting between 72-45 fps on the first level. Is that about right or should it be faster?

Half-Life 2 should run at like 100fps now... I guess it depends on what you're forcing on it though.

The E6300 is a great overclocker so if you've got the cooling, push it further. You'd definitely get a good performance increase if you hit 3Ghz or more. I still don't recommend trying to run Far Cry 2 with max settings though. Like I said, I lowered a few things quite a bit to get consistently smooth frame rates, and I have a 3.6Ghz Core 2 with 4Mb cache.

As for the PSU, it depends on what model it is really. Your computer will do all sorts of strange things if its under powered. A 520W of a good brand is probably fine, but most cheap 520W units don't have strong enough 12v rails to run a GTX260.
