Default Need Help with Home Theater Audio. I know NOTHING about audio!!!!

I am building a home theater at my house.

I bought a 60" Mitsubishi and Energy Take 5 5.1 speakers.

I need a receiver. I am using this home theater PURELY for PS3. Thats it and thats all. I want the most basic receiver that I can use with my PS3. It needs no capability of dvd or anything like that. I just basically want my PS3 to have surround sound. What is the cheapest way to accomplish this?

I just did some more researching and it looks like I just need a receiver that can accept an optical input from the PS3 and output to the 5.1 speakers.

Any suggestions? Remember. CHEAP!

Any 5.1 receiver, with an optical in, should be enough if you only plan on using it for games. I'd bet you can get one for below 200$.

Look at a Denon AVR-1610 $379.00 retail. The Audessy calibration system in them is great. Decodes all the new surround sound formats and has 3 or 4 HDMI inputs and a few fiber optic and coax inputs.

Onkyo probably have the best low-cost receivers around. I have one myself with HDMI for my xbox, ps3 and htpc for video and optical from my htpc for audio. Works like a charm

Amazon had some good deals if you wanted to take a look. Depending on what you are looking to spend, I saw the full 7.1 receiver AND speaker set (THX version) for about 750-800 bucks. It used to be around $900 or so before. Stand-alones are probably around $300 or so to start with and go up from there.

Dang, that's a nice receiver.

If there was an easy way to run car speakers (including a sub woofer) off of something like that I'd consider building a system off of a unit like that.

Honestly, it gets too hot to run it in a car, but heck, if you're thinking of putting that in a car, you might as well slap in a ventilation system for it.
