That was my mistake, I'm running 178.24's, not 177. and on my laptop i'm running 180.43. I don't know why the hell I put 177's for my laptop. I just updated those drivers yesterday.

I played a bit of it last night, got up to the first town and killed a few guys in a burnt out school. It's pretty cool. It does feel a lot like Oblivion, just not as pretty. Good voice acting though. I think that was Liam Neeson as the father. The character face making thing still sucks. It's impossible to make a good looking chick.

I think I'm having more fun with Far Cry 2 right now, but both games should keep me happy for a while.

Because a new PC game doesn't raise the Crysis bar, it automatically sucks. That's what everyone has been *****ing about here lately.
What does Crysis have to do with this? Fallout 3 has the same basic flaws as Oblivion which had problems long before Crysis was released.

That's what we're complaining about.

At first glance it seems to not have the same problems but once you visit some different areas they stick out like a sore thumb.

QFT. This game feels like an Oblivion Total Conversion. Will wait for GUI mods to remove the clunky, slowness.

As shallow as FarCry2 is, I keep going back to it and playing it. Guess I just don't feel like thinking much when I game lately.

I honestly don't have one gripe with oblivion and still love it to this day.

I don't know what all this realisation years after is all about?

Most of the people who had problems with the game had them from the beginning. I didn't mind the gameplay so much back in mid '06 but I spent a retarded amount of time making and installing mods for the game. After spending a lot of time testing mods and trying to fix the engine's problems I noticed a lot more problems with the game.

I really wish I was one of the people who could just sit down and enjoy Oblivion but I just can't anymore. It pisses me off because it has all the ingredients for a great game and most people praise it based on that... but IMO the stuff that makes all those ingredients work together is seriously flawed.

Do both "wilderness" and "dungeon" areas respawn enemies?

So what is wrong with FO3 that makes it so bad?

Well I've already said it several times, but here is the basic list...

40fps feels choppy and gives you a lot of mouse lag, where as its fine in other games. In Oblivion it was annoying but in Fallout 3 it can be really frustrating because you're trying to accurately shoot at targets that move rather quickly.

When you try to strafe around things while moving the mouse the screen jitters like crazy (left over from Oblivion). The movement in general is just very jumpy and disconnected feeling, which was not good for a medieval game and is extremely bad for a first person shooter.

The performance is very inconsistent, especially in areas with lots of complex scenery. I saw my framerate fluctuate between 30 and 80 just from walking about 50 feet, even though the scenery didn't look much different.

Large buildings and NPC activity seem to cause huge CPU loads and performance drops for no good reason (just like Oblivion). FO3 does appear to make decent use of multiple cores but the performance drops are still there.

The skill and stat systems seem to be secondary features to the player action, which can be good, but the reason games have skill systems is for people to want to improve their character. If the the player's abilities can actually make up for low character skills and stats then the RPG element is basically useless. They took one of the strongest and most rewarding RP systems in a PC game and just fit it into the Oblivion mold where FPS skills can win battles because all that matters is damage output.

You can walk anywhere early in the game without much of a threat as long as you have lots of ammo and stimpaks. I took a 10 minute walk to the area where the super mutants are hiding out near the center of the city and until I ran into them there were barely any enemies around, and the ones that were were just basic raiders. Compare this to Fallout where you actually have to stick to the northern portions of the map for a while because you simply cannot compete with the dangers to the south until you are stronger.

These are the problems I can think of that actually effect the gameplay. Most of them center around a weak role playing system and a clunky outdated game engine.

would lowering the gfx settings reduce this stutter? a 4870x2 say would that cope? i'm trying to decide if its bad programming or an 8800gtx doesn't cut it anymore?

I'm not sure.

I'll have my GTX 260 by the end of the day so... we'll see if it makes any difference.

I lowered settings and it seemed to make the game run better but the jittery movement isn't related to framerate, and if anything does cause the framerate to go drop below 50 then the mouse lag starts to show up again. It isn't much but its enough to make the game just feel "off". Its a shame they didn't just scrap their entire control\movement system and replace it with one from a first person shooter.
