Ok I think I've tried all possible combinations with the fonts and it has made no difference at all to it.

So it's just wait for the beta fix I assume to see if that does it.

Edit - this might be a stupid question but what is the difference between the 2 .run files on ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/96.43.09/ I assumed I needed the ...pkg1.run file is that correct.

Ok - I don't know quite what was causing the issue but I have sorted - I reinstalled without using my old /home and all is well now.

If it's any help to anyone then I still have my old /home available if there is likely to be anything of interest in there I will post it.

Thanks

Thank you very much, I'm looking forward to it.
The problem can be avoided by the antialiasing, but anti-aliased text doesn't work with Wine, so I can't use programs like Picasa or others.

Picasa makes a linux program so you do not need wine.

Picasa for Linux is ported to Linux using Wine, unfortunately...

As from about early June 2006, Linux versions became available as free downloads for most distributions of the Linux operating system. It is not a native Linux program but an adapted Windows version that uses the Wine libraries.

Anyway I use Wine with other applications

Yes, that is the biggest problem for now.
The problem in applications in gnome can be solved by enabling antialiasing, but appplications using wine can't.

Make sure that the next bugfix solves the problems for wine applications!

Any idea about when we will see the next beta?

I found a temporarily solution for the wine problem.
A complete HOWTO for this driver is found here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...46#post1838646

The bug affects Firefox 3 in Ubuntu 8.10 as well! Viewing the page
http://hi.baidu.com/jmlover/blog/ite...29f3d62cf.html
works for me with the nv driver, but has the font scribble
with the nvidia driver.

I'm tracking this issue in two places:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300476
and
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16146

Since this thread seems to have the best information
(how much better than a confirmation from an nvidia employee can you get?),
I'll add a link to it from those two bug reports.

BTW: is there a bugzilla for nvidia's linux support? Even an unofficial
one, like the one ati has, would be very handy.

I'm glad I found this thread, because it seems to be the most complete thread that describes my problem. I also get the smearing of text with 96.43.09. However, enabling antialiased text in gnome or kde does not solve the problem. For gnome apps and kde4 apps I have found that the solution is to use the command "nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=0" at X startup. This command fixes all gnome apps, kde4 apps and most other apps too. Wine apps I was able to fix the text with this registry key:
Quote:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"
However, I still haven't found a solution for kde 3.x apps, such as k3b or kooka. kde 4 apps show text fine, but text is still smeared in qt3 apps. Also, apps that were compiled with wine libs, such as picasa, dont show text right either. Has anyone found a fix for these situations? If not, I hope my findings will at least help someone else. I hope that a new beta will be released soon to fix this problem, because besides this problem, the legacy beta driver seems flawlessly stable.

Actually, I have an update. Scratch that entire post above. After playing around, I have a fix that works systemwide. No smeared text anywhere. Just edit the xorg.conf file, and add the following line to the device section:
Quote:
Option "NoRenderExtension" "1"
This will make your text beautiful! There is three possible (minor) side effects though. Firstly, you can't use compiz (this doesn't bother me; I've never liked it). Secondly, your cursor looks slightly blocky if you look closely. Again it is minor. Third, some wine apps may be unhappy because wine likes the render extension. But I haven't run into any major glitches yet (but I don't play games). But I've tested native opengl apps and they work at full speed no glitches. And xv works flawlessly. The wine apps that I use work fine also. This one line to the xorg file has been a complete fix for me.

Yay!
