Once Feb 2009 comes and goes as does analogue TV in the US, the need for BD and HD will sky-rocket.
By next summer everyone will have an HDTV and BD player. |

Gizmodo made a nice article in regards to bitrate comparison of various HD Providers.

Sometimes those who are well off forget there's another world down here. I live in north western Louisiana, and I'm one of the fortunate here. making $50k/year puts me in the upper echelon. Most people here can't afford a new tv, and many are just now getting a Playstation 2 (yes, TWO). |

My mom's TV is from Nov. 1997 and has no digital TV tuner. She has Time Warner but we are not paying for their box (only the signal which is $18). I've already picked out a nice 40'' Sony XBR7 to replace the aged TV. With it we'll be getting a PS3, so we'll be ready.
I already have an HDTV at my dad's and a PS3. Most everyone I know already has an HDTV or is planning to get one this holiday season. With the falling price of blu-ray players, most people will have one sooner or later. Blu-ray is not dead...it's just getting started. I remember when DVD was just getting started and people were saying it wouldn't make it and would go the way of the laser disc and something better was coming in a few years. |

I don't think streaming (guaranteed to play @ high bitrates and resolutions WHILE downloading) content will attain great market share. If Blu-Ray stumbles then downloadable HD content may take off in the form of content delivered straight to the hard drives of DVRs, consoles and proprietary set-top boxes.
Maybe you will be able to watch some of it whilst it's still downloading. I dunno, it seems to me though that at least SOME form of downloaded and locally-stored HD content will be the format of choice. I just don't see anyone committing to being able to satisfy bandwidth requirements for true streaming. ... and then on the other hand maybe I don't know enough about current internet vs. cable tv data throughput. ![]()

BD - $24.99 DVD - $19.99 Then everything would be ok. Wal-Mart already prices about $5 cheaper for the release week. Amazon also discounts. But if the above were the MSRP, then we'd be doing ok. But right now, launch day BDs tend to have a MSRP of $29.99-$34.99. It's absurd. |
