All DVB-S2 H.264 channels I've got access to play ok with the lavf demuxer and ffmpeg codexes, either with mplayer or ffplay. Although not perfect as the CPU on my test-system is too weak to handle HD with no hardware assist.

Also note that it is the identification of H.264 by the demuxer that fails in my case, not vdpau output. Mplayer's default demultiplexer as used in the examples in the patch-readme identifies DVB-S2/H.264 streams as MPEG1/2.

Unfortunately the newer mplayer patches do not improve playing x264 based mkv files. After trying to play them the reset cmd is still needed to get terminal proper again. H264 based files still play nicely.

Ugh, just noticed this in dmesg:

I've put a few HD samples on filebin as I'm trying to get these recognised by various software. They're all 20MB files, and currently require "-demuxer lavf" to play through mplayer:

A quick note of assistance that those of us running MythTV's VDPAU implementation have noticed-- 256 MB appears not to be enough to run VDPAU at this time. If you have a 256 MB card, it may not be enough. If you have integrated graphics (as I do) try going into your BIOS and increasing the shared memory to 512 MB. This made the difference between VDPAU failing every time and VDPAU working perfectly for me.

It works fine with -vo vdpau -vc ffh264.
