now that 180.22 is out, will i have to recompile mplayer for it? or can i just update from 180.18 to 180.22 and keep everything as it is?

if i must recompile, where is the updated mplayer patch?

Your clip uses more reference frames than MPlayer allocates. See earlier posts for how to hack MPlayer to fix this.

Some form of error occurred during VDPAU operation. Can you post an nvidia bug report, and the clip you were playing (or at least, a short segment of it that demonstrates the problem)

Thanks.

psychok9,

Yes. This is static information from the MPlayer source. For some reason, we ended up marking the different codecs with different levels of works/buggy information.

I have problems getting mplayer to work with with 'vdpau'

With driver 180.17 and mplayer-vdpau-3263604.tar.bz2
./mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau -playlist ...
worked fine using at most 0.3% of my CPU. Great!!!

However, the next morning, mplayer would no longer find the
ffh264vdpau codec. I had to restart X11 for mplayer to
find ffh264vdpau again. That was some days ago.

This morning I installed drivers 180.18 and 180.22 in succession
and rebuilt mplayer:

./configure --disable-x264-lavc --disable-x264 --enable-vdpau --disable-theora --prefix=/opt/mplayer-vdpau
make -j 4

Now, Mplayer complains that it can't find the codec.

./mplayer -codecs-file ./etc/codecs.conf -vo vdpau -vc ffmpeg12vdpau -playlist '/sa108/srecord.d/playlist_ts.txt'

returns

Forced video codec: ffmpeg12vdpau
Cannot find codec matching selected -vo and video format 0x10000005.
...
Video: no video
Starting playback...

VDPAU is indeed compiled in mlayer.

./mplayer -vo help
Available video output drivers:
vdpau VDPAU with X11

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

My problem is that I was not using the right codec. I need
to use 'ffh264vdpau' instead of 'ffmpeg12vdpau'. The following
command works fine for me. The CPU usage is mostly 0%.

./mplayer -codecs-file ./etc/codecs.conf -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau '/sa108/srecord.d/hd_other_jvc_the_beauty_of_japan.m2ts'

@Gregoire.Favre,

Can you reproduce the problem with high CPU usage and compiz, then run the following command:

Code:
ps auxww|grep compiz
This will show what command-line arguments are being passed to compiz. My suspicion is that the Gentoo wrapper script is passing "--indirect-rendering" for some reason. This is much less efficient than direct rendering, and could be the cause of X using a lot of CPU.

If anyone else is seeing a problem with high CPU usage with compiz/similar running, please can you also run the above command, and also report exactly which distro you're running.

Thanks.

FWIW, I'm still seeing a green screen when playing videos (using mplayer+vdpau) when Composite is turned off. When Composite is turned on the video shows up but there is terrible tearing. This is with 180.22.

For all the details see previous postings in this thread:

So in 180.22 most files now play.

However, with some I get errors such as:
