@mrn,

You didn't generate an nvidia bug report. I can't tell which GPU or driver version you're using. If you're not using 180.22, please retest with that.

I did, but the file was too large to attach and I didn't notice, sorry about that, gzipped it now.

@mrn,

You have a G80. Sorry, that GPU isn't supported.

@teox99,

You have a G86. As you already stated yourself, that GPU doesn't support VC-1 using VDPAU.

That would explain the failing, is this gpu not capable hardware wise or is it a driver issue?

thanks for your reply,
if the VC-1 works only in these cards

Geforce 8400 GS for desktop
8200, 8300 MB integrated
and 9300M GS, 9300 GS for mobile

so the only VC-1 usable card for desktop is the new relase of 8400GS isn't ?
i'm very sad about this, can you post a link to watch the card image so i can buy it without mistake?

thanx again Stephen

G80 does have some HW to support some video acceleration. The Windows driver supports whatever is there. I'm not really familiar with exactly what that HW does though. It is certainly different HW to what's in the supported chips, which is why it's not supported by VDPAU.

I believe there are a couple different desktop cards available. I can't make specific product recommendations/endorsements. However, if you look back in this thread (or possibly others), people have posted links to specific cards.

I recently picked up the Asus EN8400GS SILENT/HTP/512M card and I can confirm that it's a G98. You should easily be able to find one for around (or under) $50. A quick way to distinguish a G98 card vs. a G86 card is by looking at the stock core clock.

- G98: 567Mhz
- G86: 460Mhz

I'm not sure if there is much manufacturer selection out there for a fanless G98-based 8400GS w/ 512MB of memory. Gigabyte *may* make one but I haven't researched their offerings. One nice thing about the Asus card is that it only takes up one slot.

Here's a link to the Asus product page http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...94&modelmenu=1

and each time I run it and get this failure, I get an rm error in dmesg:

Code:

This should be fixed in the next driver release.

This seems consistent with my experience. I picked up the SPARKLE 512MB 8400GS PCI for $98 (CDN) and it was advertised as having a core clock of 567Mhz. The NVIDIA 180.xx driver identified it has having a G98 core. I confirmed VC-1 acceleration by playing back a 1080p HDDVD trailer with less than 6% CPU usage.

I can't speak for their PCIe cards but I would assume they use the same core.

SPARKLE also had a G96 based card with 1024MB. I might have been tempted if VC-1 acceleration had been supported on it.
