Default Connected to wireless network but no Internet

ok I've got a dsl cable modem here and a linksys WRT54G. I've updated the firmware to the latest version.

Here are the steps I've taken to try and get this to work.

I unplug the power of both the modem and router.

I plug the power into the modem until it finishes flashing the lights and it says internet connection established.

Then I power on the router until the lights are finished flashing.

For testing purposes, I've disabled any encryption and using the default SSID (we're up the mountains far away from anyone so no real worries)

Both my XP and Vista laptops are seeing and are able to successfully connect to the router but I don't get any internet. I can do an IP release renew and get a good ip.

I have no idea why this is. I don't have any extra LAN cables to see if I can get a connection via a wired connection from the router.

What's wierd though is that if I unplug the power to the modem, plug it back in and then plug the lan cable from the modem straight to either PC I get internet fine.

What am I missing here? is there some funky setting in the modem itself that needs to be changed? I don't want to screw it up and be out of internet all weekend.

The modem is a westell 6100 DSL2 model if that helps.

EDIT*** BWAAAA Linksys forums FTW!! I changed the IP range for the router to 192.168.0.x Rather than 192.1681.x. Apparently the modem reserves the 1.x subnet so switching the router to 0.x makes it work.
