Default Re: [180.08] Screen off after suspend to ram

Edit: that's why I wrote limited testing ...

In fact the problem also occurs with the named kernel parameters, but I had several suspend and resume cycles working fine while plugged to AC, and it stopped working when testing unplugged.

nVidia, please fix this.

NOT confirmed, adding acpi_sleep doesn't make any difference, first suspend works, second dies...
Actually all that ACPI stuff is in .fdi files, as I mentioned I tried bunch of combinations - no combination worked...
nVidia please fix this!

Hm, this is interesting.

I just resumed my laptop today after unplugging it to test and it just rebooted when it resumed. But then I ran an extended set of tests. I used acpi_sleep=S3_bios this time (before I used mode). Now I ran a small set of tests last night and both seemed equivalent but S3_mode definitely froze today. In this extended test, which had the suspend/resumes back to back (unlike last nights suspend and todays bad resume w/ acpi_sleep=S3_mode).
Suspending and resuming was successful with:
4 trials with power plugged in on suspend and resume
4 trials with power not plugged in on suspend and resume
4 trials with power plugged in on suspend and not on resume
4 trials with power plugged in not on suspend and plugged in on resume

There were no cases where suspending and resuming were unsuccessful. Statistically this would indicate there is no longer a problem unless some other process variant on time is at work. Go figure. I'm sure there's still bugs though with Fuchs and Kirugs reporting in and I'm not confident I can suspend and resume in more realistic situations (with a realistic delay between the processes). Opensuse factory - no recent updates, kde4, t61p, quadro 520m.

ps. Last nights trials had glxgears running to see if gl had to do with it, this ran fine as well.

I can confirm the problem with 180.06/08 on a Dell Vostro 1700 with an 8600M GT. I've *never* had a problem with suspend on this laptop prior to the 180.x drivers.

One thing I've found, is that if I switch to a console and do an "echo mem > /sys/power/state", the system suspends and resumes properly, and I can switch back to X from there.

But if I try it from KDE, the system suspends but will not resume. Bizarre.

This is a definite regression from previous drivers.

Just my 2c...

Cheers,
KV

I confirm that - Thinkpad T61p with Mandriva Cooker and 180.08 suspends to ram from console and resumes back but from KDE only first part of the process.

I just changed from a 7600 GT to a 9600 GT without changing anything else in my system, suspend to RAM was working perfectly with the 7600 GT, but with the 9600 GT it make Xorg quit at resume time... but I can start xorg again then.

Hmm, lately (not when I started this thread http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=109199 resume / hibernate thread almost a year ago), now nVidia is a bit more talkative, at least they say smth sometimes... But as history shows, suspend / hibernate topics are left w/o any input from nVidia at all.
So this would not be surprise about this thread as well even situation is different, though...

Problem still present in 180.11, keeps me at 177.82 because every 180.* is completely useless for laptop users.

Please nvidia, same configuration different driver version, fully reproducible black screen after each resume from S3 when not on AC.

I hope this will be fixed at latest in the final release.

Just tested 180.11 and the problem is still there. The screen never turns back on after suspend - wether on AC or battery mode. The only way to get the laptop working again is to press the power button for a few seconds until it forcefully shuts down and I turn it back on.

This is on my laptop's 8600m GT, this doesn't happen on my desktop 9500 GT - suspend works perfectly there.

Please Nvidia, let us know the status of this bug or release a fix. It seems to be affecting many laptop users and the 180 series is working perfectly other than in this critical area.

I have to stick with 177.80 for now, .82 has a few performance issues with maximizing/unmaximizing windows, even with the tweaks applied.

is it really that dead ?

can't it be rebooted via Magic SysRQ Key ? (r e i s u b)

this is definitely better for your harddrive's health, afaik there's a key combination to print something on the screen dunno if it's p - ...

Yup, it's that dead. Neither CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE or CTRL + ALT + DEL can bring it back.
