Default Re: [180.08] Screen off after suspend to ram

I tried applying the beforementioned changes - no success at all! That file, by the way, says that "According to nvidia, the only currently supported way to resume g80 class hardware is to re-run a cached copy of the video BIOS. No other quirks will be effective".
This is really interesting then, how tomee got everything running by quirks that are not supposed to work at all :O
Anyhow, come on nVidia, post smth, like "yea, we're workin on it" or "ahh, we don't care" or whatever, silence is your enemy anyhow...

I noticed that new 180.16 drivers are out. I'm away this weekend, so I can't test if suspend is fixed this time... can someone give it a try and see if this release finally works?

Oh well, guess it was too much to ask for. Thanks for testing it out!

Anyone want to try new OpenGL 3.0 beta driver, which is based on 180.11, but still, maybe we have some kind of luck
I'll test that at the weekend, if noone will do that before (can't restart X now )

I've done a bit of browsing around and I've read that the 180.* series of drivers are not only breaking suspend in Linux, but in Windows as well.

I don't intend to sound pushy, but since so many users are being affected, I do think Nvidia should at least check in and give us a status report on this issue - or at least guide us to an effective workaround in the meantime. 180.* series drivers are being adopted quickly due to their VDPAU technology and noticeable performance improvements, but us laptop owners simply can't afford to make the switch due to this.

Again, a critical regression that prevents a huge subgroup of users from testing new drivers. And no feedback or fix for weeks. It really limits the use(-fulness) of these beta releases.

Same problem for me on a T61p w/ Nvidia 570M. Currently running 180.18, suspend has not worked since <177.whatever

System is totally unresponsive after resume. Not able to reboot unless powered off by power button, sysreq doesn't work.

Problem confirmed to be nvidia device/module by issuing "echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace" and monitoring dmesg for RTC value on reboot after failed resume.

Too bad Lenovo gave me the shaft by not making the discrete graphics replaceable *cough*ati*cough*

Recently got Samsung Q45 laptop with NVidia GeForce 8400M. With both unrestricted and restricted drivers when I woke up from suspend the screen did not turn on at all. I started to look for which quirks are enabled. All the settings for quirks are in '/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop'. In '20-video-quirk-pm-samsung.fdi' we have:

<match key="system.hardware.product" string_outof="Q35/Q36;SM40S;SQ45S70S">
<merge key="power_management.quirk.s3_bios" type="bool">true</merge>
<merge key="power_management.quirk.s3_mode" type="bool">true</merge>
</match>

However doing 'lshal| grep power_management' shows this:

power_management.acpi.linux.version = '20080609' (string)
power_management.can_hibernate = true (bool)
power_management.can_suspend = true (bool)
power_management.can_suspend_hybrid = false (bool)
power_management.is_powersave_set = false (bool)
power_management.quirk.vbe_post = true (bool)
power_management.type = 'acpi' (string)

I was cracking my head why quirks do not match until I discovered another file '21-video-quirk-nvidia.fdi' which overrides these quirks from samsung leaving only:

<merge key="power_management.quirk.vbe_post" type="bool">true</merge>

and mentioning:

<!-- According to nvidia, the only currently supported way to resume g80
class hardware is to re-run a cached copy of the video BIOS. No other
quirks will be effective -->

I do not really understand what 'vbe_post' and 's3_bios' mean, but it seems that 'samsung'`file is cleverer than the nvidia's one because when I remove '21-video-quirk-nvidia.fdi' (and do 'sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart') everything works smoothly.

Well, I spent another hour today trying to fix this by editing hal files to try almost every possible power_management option & restarting hal daemon + pm-suspend. Results were lackluster, I used to be able to get it to resume if I tried a few seconds after suspend but not even that is working anymore. I don't think this is a hal/kernel tunable option that would allow one to resume reliably, its definitely a bug in the nvidia driver.

(I've attached bug reports on this before in this same thread way back when, not much has changed: opensuse 11.1 x86_64, t61p)

God damnit nvidia, say something or release a fix so I can stop looking at this damn forum everyday. 58 posts now if you're even reading.

I don't understand why they won't even reply to any suspend thread, but they seem active in others... Is discussing suspend blacklisted or something and we're not aware of it?

Try to debug pm-suspend from terminal first - you have better control in this way.
Just type something like

sudo pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode

Can you write if it works?
