Thanks to davelaser, Daniel was able to get a reliable reproduction of this annoyingly elusive problem and I was able to track it down. I need to look into it a little more, but I ought to be able to get it fixed for a future release. Thanks to everyone who helped out!

Just to add a bit of info on how to reproduce this, the issue only appears to happen with compositing enabled and being used (such as kwin 4) and only happens in windowed playback. Disabling compositing clears up the issue.

When you find out what causes it could you describe it briefly :-). I'm dying to know how such a weird bug could be happening. Don't be afraid to make it technical.

I only tested both my displays for about half an hour, but the checkerboard patterns and red flashes did not happen again... so far it's looking good

This driver version unfortunately doesn't like my monitor (see separate thread that I posted today). Fix that and I'd be happy to put a new driver through its paces. Note that I am using KDE4 but I have seen the problem in both windowed and full-screen playbacks.
