Default No down clocking with 9600GT

Hi,
I got a 9600 GT with driver version 177.82 (64 bit). nvidia-settings claims that adaptive clocking is enabled. Nevertheless both memory and core clock are always at max frequency. There is only one performance level (labeled 0 with frequency 650 and 900 for core and memory respectivley). Details:

I tried changing things manually via the xorg.conf by various combinations of

Neither of these changed anything.

Is this a know issue? Is there a solution or workaround? I would like to avoid using the "Coolbits" option to set frequencies manually.

I have the same issue with a 9600gt

the fan speed is at the maximum it's horrible, and changing settings have no effects

Powermizer is always turned off for desktop NVIDIA products (read no automatic power savings).

Live with that or use nvclock utility.

Yes it is a desktop 9600GT(from gigabyte), and yes, powermizer is working flawlessly:-)

nvclock doesn't work

and in fact even on windows with nvidia drivers, the fan speed is always the max, like the max you have for a few second when you boot your computer.

I used nvclock with a 6600gt, it worked fine, here it simply doesn't, and the bahavior even on windows is not what it's supposed to be.

Do you think it' possible to live with a gpu fan at 100% even when you are not gaming at all ?

it doesn't work with rivatuner on windows either

I'd be glad to see your timings readings (nvclock -s) at idle and while you are stressing your GPU (like playing a 3d game or running an OpenGL screensaver).

To a date I've seen zero desktop NVIDIA products which downclock themselves when not being actively used.

That is plain wrong.

Powermizer does work and is enabled by default on desktop products too.

Even my GTX 285 does that.
My older 7800 GTX does this too.

I have not seen one that doesn't after the Geforce FX era.

Thanks! This is a great news, can you please upload your video BIOS (you can extract it using NiBiTor or look in the ~/.nvclock directory)?

BTW, I have yet to find any desktop GPU that has performance profiles.
