The problem is that I can't seem to reproduce the issue, no matter what I do. Is there anything in particular that would help trigger the corruption/freeze? When the problem happens, does NVRM output Xid messages in the kernel log? It would help if you could login from a remote system while the problem is happening and watch the kernel log; please post any findings here. Only one user's nvidia-bug-report.log exhibited Xid messages and I'm not sure they're directly related. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the reply Plagman. The only information I can give you can be found in the thread I referred to in my last post (Operating conditions, xorg config settings). Unfortunately, I can give you no other information. The system is completely dead in the water when the problem occurs, and I cannot ssh into the machine from another location. The only thing I can do is power cycle the machine.

I have a few nvidia bug report logs generated when my screen began to flicker like this. using 180.11 when the flickers first start I can switch to VT1 run a nvidia-bug-report and then switch back and the problem generally clears up for a time (they do return, eventually.)

hope these help!

how about magic sysrq key ?

in several cases when it appears not to react to input it still responds to the magic sysrq combo

alt / altgr + print + r e i s u b (one of these letters after another *slowly*) --> which leads first to syncing data on your harddrive (can be seen: flashing hdd led) and then a reboot

It can take days or just hours for the problem to show up.

Yes, I know sysrq keys. It is the first thing I try after any hard lock. No dice. Like I said, the only thing I can do is power cycle.

Searching in syslog I found those lines about Xid
Code:
Dec 15 19:05:02 Isengard kernel: NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 13, 007e 00000000 00005097 00001458 00000003 00000080
Dec 15 19:05:02 Isengard kernel: NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 13, 007e 00000000 00005097 00001458 00000003 00000080
Dec 15 19:05:21 Isengard kernel: NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 8, Channel 0000007e
Dec 15 19:05:21 Isengard kernel: NVRM: Xid (0005:00): 12, COCOD 0000007e 00000000 00000030 000015e0 00000000
Hope it helps!
My system freezes when I try to change either core clock or memory clock frequency. I've already had this problem with 177.x (until it was fixed)

my bad

sorry for you guys, the last time I had this kind of hardlock it was with either ATI or (afaik) the 169.XX drivers and at that time really often

if everyone's encountering this problem is running Ubuntu (32 or 64 bits) how about temporarily testing another distribution (if your time allows of course)

perhaps it's caused by *buntu ?

Running Gentoo here too, 180.* black screen as soon as X starts and hard freeze..
177.82 works fine.

The worst nvidia beta driver bar none.

Will try 180.16 when it makes it to an overlay.
