Default Vista or XP?

I've been using XP home for a LONG time now... I don't mind it one bit, but with a GTX 260 coming this week, I'm really tempted to try out DX10.

Has the driver support gotten any better? and If i do swing towards vista, should I be looking at 32 or 64 bit?

Well, since you only have 2GB of RAM I'd say 32-bit. If you can up it to 4GB go with 64-bit.

As for drivers, you wont have any issues, and the frame rates in Vista will be comparable to that of what you got in XP.

Now, DX 10, that's a whole different animal. For some reason most games that support DX10 actually run slower under it. For example, Crysis. There are "tweaks" or "hacks" that allow you to get DX10 visual effects under DX9. And from what I have read it runs better even with the improved visuals just sticking with DX9.

But, honestly, you are best to just try it for yourself and come to your own conclusion. I myself don't mind DX10 as the FPS always remains playable for me. If you don't like DX10, you can just play the game in DX9 and not worry about it.

Don't waste your money or your time and just wait for Windows 7.

Thanks for both the replies...

I forgot to say, I'm a college student and get Windows Vista for free on the basis that i'm a CSE (computer-sci) major at MSU.

So, cost isn't an issue, but I don't know if it'd really improve any games by being able to use DX10. I think I might give it a shot and see what happens... If not I can always roll back at no cost.... just waste alot of time

You'd probably have no need to roll back to XP. DX9 titles run just as well under Vista as they do under XP.

Well, then again, I've never ran Vista on a gaming rig with less that 4GB of RAM... so I might end up wrong in the end.

Regardless, give it a go- try both DX10 and DX9 in Vista and form your own conclusions. I, however, doubt you'll be disappointed.

i would say go for 64bit vista, Redeemed suggested 32bit and that is right for 3gb system, but why upgrade again later. plus ram is dirt cheap.

With his Athlon X2 & 2GB of ram, i'm sure that he won't notice the difference.
