Default Re: Vista or XP?

well.... i'm on a very OLD motherboard , which only has regulard DDR memory slots.... which means i probably won't ever be upgrading memory again until i go with a full system upgrade because DDR isn't exactly cheap anymore....

I think i'll be giving the 32-bit a go... i might try the 64-bit just to take advantage of my 64-bit proc... but i doubt it will be much different performance wise.

I have both the 32-bit, and 64-bit versions of Vista Ult, and XP pro at my disposal... so, lol maybe i'll try them all if i don't get too tired of reformatting

also... Windows 7, I will be trying as soon as it comes out... i'm sure this microsoft academic alliance will extend to that as well... i hope

Go for the memory if you want. 32 bit Windows will still address up to 3.5gb of it. As far as DX10 goes, it's kind of dead IMO since DX11 is being pushed out soon enough. I wouldn't waste time migrating to a new OS when Windows 7 is around the corner.

Just get vista and get out of the stoneage. Vista fully patched and set up properly is a nice operating system. If you need help with it post your questions, I love it . Xp is for old men, and losers

Vista 64bit ultimate here. Fewer problems and complaints than I had with XP, with the exception of early drivers. Now that drivers are fairly well sorted, I don't even think of going back to XP.

On the ram, Vista will run decent on 2Gb, but 4, imho, should be considered minimum for a fully responsive OS.

No offence pardnor, I started with a 386, back in 1990 , however we need to grow to progress, So vista x86 is an improvment to xp. Any reason you can't code with vista?

I fully understand what you're saying.... I think when it's all said and done I'll keep a dual-boot partition of about 10gb for XP so i can load it up if i need to for any reason....

I do like that i got XP down to 16 processes, using 64mb of memory and running fine a 1.8ghz Celeron with only 128mb of memory and a 5200 pci-card

I dare anyone to try that with vista...

That's not a very strong argument. Just because something is new doesn't mean that it is progress.

I agree with you, at work I need XP due that Vista is still on validation on IT dep. and Cisco VPN client only works on 32 bit OS, at home I still have XP 32 bits on a partition to work remotely but primaly I use Vista x64.
