the shadows can not be fixed because it is not an artifact of the pc version. To get the game to run fast and yet have the shadow density (number of objects to cast them) they needed, they went with a shadowing method that had that coarse edging. The consoles all have it too, its part of the 3d engine.

Maybe something like a GOTY version with the DLC? It's not too uncommon that games get re-released with some addional content, Lost Planet Colonies comes to my mind. Another possiblity is that they sold more copies than orginally produced so they might order more copies and this time around incl. the patches. The second option seems less likely because I can't really remember that this happened before except with really horrible and buggy games ("Bet on Soldier" for instance).

So I started playing this again when I recently installed my new 260GTX, and the performance still isn't all that great. I'm sure it's been talked about before but why do I have to have the shadows turned all the way up just to see where I'm driving? It's almost like nothing else in the game matters (settings wise) but the shadows. WTF?

Anybody got any tweaks for performance, but still allowing the game to look half way decent? Sorry, I just don't have time to read through 85 pages.
