Same exact problem (Acer 6930G).
I'm really getting annoyed with this, I have been waiting since December for a driver that will use my video card at 100%....
I'm thinking of selling the laptop and buying one with an ATI video card.

Installed 180.50
Powermizer is still broken, only lower powerlevers are ever used/enabled.

Only performance level 0 and 1 are used,
level 2 and 3 are never reached.

64 bit system
driver: nvidia 180.50
system: ACER aspire 6930G
kernel: 2.6.27.6 x86_64
Model: GeForce 9600M GS
Video BIOS: 62.94.3c.00.17

Text console (ctrl-alt-F1) also stays black and is still unusable.

After shutting down X. The only way to get a display in the console again is blindly logging in and posting the videocard using vbetool (of the nouveau project)
After that I get a visible text-console again, until X is started again. Then the black console returns.

It would be interesting to know if the same problem appears under windows. since I don't use that O$ maybe someone else can check it out

I made a type here.
I don't use vbetool, I use vbtracetool -p (see Nouveau project)
What I do is:
CTRL-ALT-F1
username (blindly)
password (blindly)
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop (blindly)
password (blindly)
sudo vbtracetool -p (blindly)
password

Then after a second I get a visible console again.
When I restart X the console goes black again.

Unfortunately you really need to shutdown X first and blindly login.
Trying any of this from X does not work.
(vbtracetool -p and X is a BAD combination)

I have this O$ (Vista) installed by vendor (no other possibility by purchase), but I would boot THIS only when absolutely necessary. I dont want to catch more viruses and house new trojan horses in . But I know that the driver has serious stability problems there when running 3D apps (http://www.nvlddmkm.com/) . And as I know it hasnt any text console .

180.51 installed:
Console switching not working, powermizer not working.
After some time it will be half of year waiting for the fix .

does your GPU run at full throttle under load using windows?

I have another theory: some time ago news spread around that some nvidia mobile GPUs have mechanical problems when heating up and causing permanent damage. maybe the driver tries to detect affected chips and refuses to switch to full speed to prevent damage to the GPU? that's the reasen why I asked for the windows behaviuor.

well, there is many room for speculation as long as the development keeps a lid on information about the powermizer issue

In my case the GPU (9800M GS) runs at full speed under Windows Vista but only performance level 1 of 0,1,2,3 in Linux.

Thumbs down Re: 180.11 powermizer still broken

hi folks,

last n8 I took some time and went a step further. I've installed windows vista 64 bit with the latest official nvidia drivers and guess what: my damn 9600M GT just won't step on the gas in windows either stuck at performance level 1 *arrrrghhh*.

So I took a look at nibitor. yeeeezee....I know this tool isn't supported at all but it's my last chance to foce my gpu to work at the speed it's supposed to. basically what I did was to use the clock speed für GPU, shader and RAM from performance level 2 and 3 and set it to level 1 so the 9600M GT should reach level 2 and 3 speeds even if it's stuck in performance level 1.

at 400 MHz GPU and 300 MHz RAM in level 1 (was level 2 previously) windows and X froze almost instantly after starting up. using 500MHz/800MHz (level3) in level 1 I got a brilliant lightshow with many colored pixels (like in the matrix movie ) when firing up my system indicating that the hardware(!) CANNOT RUN AT THAT SPEED. after restoring the original values everything works as before (slow) again including the black VT swich fun .

since this procedure is not supported I cannot ask for warranty so I'm stuck with a underclocked, probably defective hardware! this is definately the last nvidia hardware I'll ever gonna buy! Let's hope the radeonhd OS driver comes along quickly and I'm gonna throw this card out of my laptop!

ok....it seems that vista 32bit clocks the card correctly, 64 bit doesn't. so it's not a hardware problem after all

best

Is this a 64 bit only bug also on linux? I run 64 bit Fedora 11 and i have the problem.

I see if I can get hold of some 32 bit live CD containing the NVidia driver and check if it works there (I have no spare partitions and no desire to format the computer to test).

I habe no idea if it's related to the 32/64 bit drivers. so give it a try
