same problem here (ubuntu 8.10 - nvidia beta 180.17). but i only have gradient steps in greyscale. switching the resolution in nvidia-settings "solves" the problem temporary.
really strange. seen this behaviour since beta drivers 180+. the released driver 177.82 works perfectly well.

Has anyone tried the newest "stable" 180.22 drivers? I am still experiencing the same problem with those.

I also have banding with the 180.22 drivers. If I open "Nvidia X Server Settings" and change the "GPU Scaling Method" the issue is resolved temporarily. Hopefully a fix is found soon.

Same problem. 180.22/7800GTX. If I toggle 'Force Full GPU Scaling' in nvidia-settings GUI, the problem resolves temporarily. Someone please suggest a fix.

I can confirm that the problem disappears if I suspend and resume. But that one temporary.

Same problem here. And the "fiddle with flat panel scaling options" works around it. It happens when Compiz loads (looks like something switches to 16bit). I've never seen this on any other machine with a nVidia card in it.

nVidia driver 180.29
nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce Go 6600] (rev a2)
