Default Tried loading 173.14.15 again with no luck!!!

First off I have disabled bulletproofX before starting the load. Next I exited the gdm by doing a ctrl+alt+F1 to get into the command prompt I logged in and ran sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop. I then ran the nvidia loader as root. All seemed to go all right during the load and the screen said it completed successfully. I then rebooted and ran nvidia-settings as root and it said the nvidia driver was not loaded. I then ran sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh... I have included that file and the Xorg.0.log file. I hope you can make out what has happened.

I am trying to load this on the newest version of Ubuntu 8.10................

In your xorg.conf, the nvidia driver is not specified, so it uses the open-source "nv" driver that comes with X.
Re-run nvidia-xconfig and/or edit xorg.conf.

I reconfigured xorg.conf and set it up as so:

Upon booting I got a message stating that the XServer could not be started. It then told me to reconfigure gdm and then restart. I have no idea what it was talking about so I rebooted in safe mode and changed the xorg.conf file back to "nv" and then the system rebooted fine. While in safe mode I re-ran nvidia-bug-report.sh....... I am listing it here.

The xorg.conf looks better now. But you have to create a bug report directly after X fails to start.
(Check first whether there is something very obvious going wrong in the Xorg.log and correct it, if possible).

How would you generate the bug report when the system hangs and the only way out is a hard shutdown. This has bugged me for sometime now. I have had other problems with other nvidia drivers and have yet to find a way to run nvidia-bug-report program roght after the lockup. Do you have any ideas?

If X fails to start, it should eventually fall back to a txt console login. Maybe you just have to wait a bit longer til it realizes that, or maybe GDM handles this differently and doesn't do it at all..

I will try restarting with nvidia driver and wait and see what happens, if anything. Thanks so far for your help. This is the farthest I have gotten trying to run this new driver.

Rebooted again with nvidia as the driver and again it could not startX and the gdm would not load. This time I waited and it did come up with a prompt. I entered my login information and then ran the nvidia bug report tool and saved the xorg.0.log file.

When you log in through a console prompt, start X manually like shown in the sticky:

Code:
startx -- -logverbose 6
Then, when X fails to start run the bug report and post it.

X did not start again. When I got the login message, I logged in and then ran:
Quote:
startx -- - logverbose 6
I received the errors:
Quote:
Connection Refused (errno 111)
No such process (errno 3)
I then ran:
Quote:
sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh

Well, looking at your bug report nothing really sticks out.

Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GPU GART.

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x79) [0x80c3009]
1: [0xb7f43400]
Saw signal 4. Server aborting.
You could try run it in a debugger like gdb to get a more detailed backtrace as to what caused X to fail to start. It is possible that there is a bug in the SSE-less version of the driver as I have only used 173.14.15 with an SSE compatible cpu.
