Default Ubuntu 8.10 display blanks

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10, and did a clean install on a new hdd recently, and I've run all the updates which included an nvidia driver. Everything looked fine this morning.

When I turned on this afternoon, my windows have no edges - the title bars are missing. Also any dialog boxes are blank - completely white. Even the terminal is just a blank space. The icons on the panels have moved too, though I don't know if that's connected.

I have an nvidia geforce4 mx440, and the updates included the latest driver, version shows as 96.43.09. I also have compiz installed. Everything was OK this morning, and I've made no changes to compiz or the nvidia driver since this morning.

So, as I can't even access the terminal, how can I correct this?

TIA

Disabling the driver has cured the problem - no special effects for me now!

Add the following options to the Screen section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

There is no such option. AddARGBGLXVisuals is the one you want.

You could also try adding
Quote:
Option "RenderAccel" "False"
to the screen section of your xorg.conf file.
