Question eVGA GeForce 8400 GS - VDPAU fails to create decoder

Unless everything I've read about all 84XX series (specifically this card is listed as a G86 during Xorg startup), this card should be VDPAU compatible. I've tried 180.06, 180.11 and 180.16 with various combinations of patched mplayer and MythTV SVN (careful to make sure they are compatible, i.e. use a myth revision before the 180.16 patches with 180.11 and .06, and/or mplayer patched accordingly). In every case, I get some sort of error and the screen blinks before the app segfaults. I have tried in Ubuntu 8.10 x86 (on an Athlon64) and also in Fedora 10 x86_64 (on an Intel Core 2 Duo). Similar errors existed on both (below). I also have a 9400 GT (G96) that works with VDPAU when placed in both systems playing the same content (H.264 and MPEG2), so I suspect it's not the streams.

Turning on debugging gives the following from mplayer (currently running 180.11 in the Fedora 10 x86_64 system):
VDPAU capture: Enabled
vdp_imp_device_create_x11(0x12f4630, 0, -, -)
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 1028 60 5
VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace:
01: /usr/lib64/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x7f7ec1b84768]
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 0 5264
VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace:
01: /usr/lib64/libvdpau_nvidia.so [0x7f7ec1b84768]
-> 25
Error at libvo/vo_vdpau.c:179

I have attached the bugreport. I tried reading the forums to search for similar issues, but didn't see anything (but I didn't go into every thread).

Any ideas? I'm very excited that nVidia has allowed me to breathe new life into my MythTV system with a simple video card upgrade.

Thanks for the bug report. We'll look into it.

Out of curiosity, when you're using G86, you don't have the G96 card plugged in too, or SLI active?

Also, does this still happen if you reboot your PC from scratch, and attempt to run a VDPAU application without ever restarting the X server (i.e. without ever logging out)?

Thanks for the reply, Stephen.

At all times when I was testing I only had one card in the given system at a time. The Fedora 10 x86_64 system that the G86 is in now is an Asus P5W DH Deluxe board that uses Crossfire so no SLI enabled (the other mother board is an MSI nforce4 board). I neglected to mention earlier-this eVGA 8400 GS is a 512MB PCIe card. The system it's in now (that I used to create the bug report earlier) has a Core 2 Duo 2.13 with 4 GB of RAM. There is no overclocking setup through the BIOS.

I took the system down to completely off (unplugged), then attempted to run the patched mplayer (that used to work with the other card) on first boot and login. Mostly the same looking error:
The middle number changed to "Error detected 1028 43 5". The other "Error detected" had the same two numbers and the addresses in brackets after the backtraces changed to 0x115768

Let me know if you require any other information.

Would love to hear an update on this. I have the same problem with core2 7200 / intel chipset / G86 8400gs.

I'm running 64 bit gentoo and if I run mythfrontend displayed on the local machine but outputting debug to remote shell and I taskset -c 0 the process, then I can get video to play sporatically until I attempt to do anything, then I get a black screen hang.

Its weird, but I thought I'd mention it seems like a timing problem of some kind.

I sure hope the G86 can do this, if it can't this would be the third time I've had to upgrade a card because it couldn't quite do what I needed it to. heh.

Raydude.

I appear to have the same problem. I tried vdpinfo and also get an error (25). Wondered if you are experiencing the same or am I looking at a different issue.

Please follow the instructions in the debug sticky. We can tell if it's the same issue from the debug information.

vinbiz, Can you also attach the MPlayer output when running with the debug environment variables set; that's the most important part. Thanks.
