Default VLC vdpau

I just thought I'd pass this along...

I was reading over on the VLC forum that two students are working on an implementation of vdpau for VLC. This is really great news! I love how this is really taking off and it's being widely accepted in the linux community!

That makes me happy. Glad the community is supporting NVIDIA's efforts.

Having VDPAU on VLC would be a significant advance that allowed use of many older motherboards.

Is there any chance of NVIDIA assisting advance this?

I wouldn't wait for a VDPAU implementation for vlc, but the more important question is why don't you use MPlayer?

Try this guide to use vdpau through the va-api wrapper.

Good question. The simple answer is VLC pretty much just did what I wanted well. That is play 720p and 1080i H264 UDP streams over the LAN as triggered by a LAN php webpage with local TV channels on it, that also controlled a Hdhomerun LAN HD tuner. A non tech user can click a channel and VLC just starts streaming over the LAN. Works well on Windows and Linux, no special install required. From a user perspective the web page is the remote control, and I was looking to use a nexus one as the remote - to control any "TV" from anywhere in the home, once VLC had started on a PC that is. One reason for all this was that mythtv's LiveTV was not reliable and when I started there was no dev interest in honing it up. This may have changed however LiveTV is still not as stable and a custom install is required. I find VLC streaming is reliable and controllable over the LAN. What I was looking to do has a very standard user software with no special install - browser and VLC! The major issue is that adequate hardware was required.

I've only limited experience of mplayer, certainly it works well when it does, however when tinkering with it I found it much more fussy in its requirements. I'll look further into mplayer as you suggest as it may well be a satisfactory alternative. (Can mplayer be triggered to run and play a stream via a LAN web page? This can be done with VLC using a .asx file on the server. I didn't note this capability of mplayer when I tried using it.) Thanks Carl.

Seems vdpau is coming on VLC 1.1, not sure when but it may be quite soon....

AFAIK, VLC is using the hardware only for decoding, which means getting yuv data back to sysmem, so do not expect a big offload.

Interesting. With Single core Pentium 3000 systems not quite managing to display 720p and 1080i H264 within VLC one lives in hope the offload changes will be enough to cross the threshold that allows these videos to display in their full glory! I guess testing CPU % when 1.1 is released is going to tell us!
