Default how to test the newly installed 96.43.09

at last, i was able to install the 96.43.09 on ubuntu 8.10. yay!
i have geforce4 440 ge. (Dell Latitude C840)
(i used the nvidia package0. the main trick was a line
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP" in the display section in the xorg.conf)
now i want to play with the xorg.conf settings.
A) what's your favorite method to test the performance of each setting? sure, some simes things look a bit faster than other times, but i need something quantitative...
B) any good reference for tinkering with the xorg.conf file? in particular i would like to know what does the above option mean, as well as lines like Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "TRUE" and Option "ModeValidation" "DFP-0: NoEdidDFPMaxSizeCheck, NoVesaModes".
Thanks in advance for your advice

ok, i realized the second question is silly, since xorg.conf has a manpage. cool.
and yet, any quantitative tool to test the effect of the changes on the performance?
