Default Forcing gpu scaling at 640x480 resolution causes graphical corruption

If the display resolution is set to 640x480 (for example after opening a
full screen game with low default settings) whilst full gpu scaling is
forced on in nvidia-settings with any scaling method I get unusable
display corruption, usually I have to restart X.

When full gpu scaling is disabled and the digital panel uses its native
scaling, 640x480 works just fine. My laptop's display panel has 1280x800 native resolution.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? It's been present for me since at least the 100.x driver series.
