Default So is Blu-Ray starting to come into its own?

so, when we had the whole HD-DVD/BD debacle, we argued a lot, but in the end we found that neither format sold very well and that the sales of both have been just awful as of late.

however, in the holiday season, a lot of people have really been pushing the format and a lot of ppl have been buying it. (my dad got a BD player and i got him Batman Begins and The Dark Knight)

so, when i went out to buy some BD movies, they were actually pretty hard to find in some stores. and players are flying off the shelves in many places.

so, is BD finally taking off? or is this just a holiday thing that will die down after the season?

I would say both, it is slowly taking off, but then again it is selling more now because of holidays.

I still have no dedicated BD player, use HTPC for that

Blu-Ray has been on a up hill climb for awhile now, The Dark Knight just showed that the market is really interested in HD Movies. Sure its not near DVD but prices have also been falling on the players and movies so its can only go up... don't see it going away.

The players are finally selling due to real prices but the movies are just way way over priced IMO. $29.99 for a movies is just dumb.

I got Dark Knight for $23 (well actually $13 thanks to $10 Coupon for Best Buy), new releases are pretty decently priced.

for the price of one movie, i get to watch at least 20-30+ a month thanks to netflix.

this whole collecting movies is just dumb, had a huge VHS collection, all in some landfill now. Everytime you get decent size collection, some new better format comes out.

But we don't have netflix here and the movies are 30€ each. Thank God for rentals!

And blu-ray sales have gone up in Europe as well so it's definitely on the rise:

A total of 6.5 Million units have been sold in Europe to date (up 320%), with the market share expected to double next year to 6%. So far, roughly 800,000 stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players have been sold in Europe, but that number is expected to triple for next year, up to 2.5 Million.

Jim Bottoms, Managing Director, Corporate Development, at Futuresource, commented, "The Blu-ray disc format offers an unparalleled home entertainment experience, something all those involved with this technology have always known. Once people see the benefits of Blu-ray for themselves, they soon realize the difference it can make. Seeing is believing after all! We fully expect Blu-ray to keep on bucking the current economic trend and continue its rapid growth over the next few months and beyond, stimulated by falling prices and even more bundling deals with large screen TVs."

There are a lot!

I prefer the local video rental service, though. Takes me 10 minutes to get a movie and it's 1€/day.

Blu-Ray has picked up in interest/sales, but I'm still waiting on it being more of a standard than DVD. That or some dirt cheap prices.
