Default 180.18 driver for GeForce on 64-bit fails

It looks to me like this driver was just released after I got the card last week -- which would be lucky if I could get it to work. Installation went fine and then the X server craps out:

Code:
NVIDIA: Could not load device file /dev/nvidia0 (Function not implemented)
This exact line does not appear in the xorg.log attached tho. I googled, searched this site, and checked the "common problems" and other documentation but could find nothing relating to the problem that was useful.

ps. /dev/nvidia0 does exist and the module is set uid/gid 0

Sounds to me like you aren't getting the nvidia module loaded. Try a "sudo modprobe nvidia", then make sure it loaded with "lsmod | grep nvidia". If it's there, then try starting X.

I have it running on Mythbuntu 8.10 (Ubuntu Intrepid based) 64 bit.

And for me it works on Suse 11.0 (64) and 11.1 (64).

After trying to load the module please start "dmesg" and post output, if its not working.

And yet, it is the module (NVIDIA) which issues the message, "Can't load device file"...

This is the cause of the problem:

Is there an updated bios for your mobo?

If not try passing pci=msi to the kernel and NVreg_EnableMSI=1 to the nvidia module.

I don't know, BIOSTAR's site appears to be down right now. But thanks much for actually trying to diagnose my problem, Dragoran.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to tell you if it worked because I've already taken the card out and must return it for other reasons (exchange on more crucial hardware I can't afford otherwise).

take care y'all
