Default Unable to find available Display Devices for screen 1

Please let me know if this is not posted in the correct place, and I'll open a thread elsewhere.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 on an HP HDX laptop (8800M GTS) with very few changes except that I installed Compiz-Fusion from source instead of from the Ubuntu distribution.

The graphics, compiz, games, etc., are working perfectly, but I would like to run dual monitors when using the laptop at home. I would prefer to not use Twinview but seperate screens if possible. Twinview does appear to work exactly as expected and bridges the 1920x1200 laptop DFP to the external 1920x1200 monitor connected to CRT.

When I try to connect as a separate screen, I receive the following message in Xorg.0.log:

(EE) NVIDIA(1): Unable to find available Display Devices for screen 1.

This error occurs with the monitor connected. (The monitor actually appears forced into power-save.) I have already included the following in the second device block:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"

I've attached a bug-report which should contain all required details.

If upgrading to a newer driver is likely to resolve this I'll happily try it, but if the error is user error, I'd like to avoid it.
