Default Ubuntu 8.10 and GeForce2 and Noob

Need some help please, I'm new to Linux.

My WinXP PC with integrated GeForce2 graphics is running Ubuntu 8.10 installed on a second HD. Ubuntu runs fine, but I want to upgrade the graphics driver. I downloaded the "legacy" graphics driver "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run". I'm logged in as "root" user. I opened a terminal window in the directory where the graphics driver is stored and did "chmod 777 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run". I then listed the directory and saw the permissions were changed to RWX for everyone (so far, so good). I then try to run the file by typing "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run". The unpacking process starts and all looks good. A new window opens and then a message appears "error-must be run as root" and an OK button.
I'm the root user, I'm in the same directory as the graphics driver file and I've changed all permissions on the file to read, write, execute for everyone. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks so much for your help.

You aren't the root user. Try typing "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run" at the terminal. This will temporarily give you root level privileges.

I would recommend you to install 96.43.09 instead. *.07 version doesn't work in 8.10.

Also, this driver has already been added into the repository. I don't see any reason to install it manually from the command line.

I've tried 96.43.09 and still have crash problems. I am able to get the desktop running but very sluggish, some menus come up blank and it eventually crashes. I've done the install both from synaptic and from command line and get the same result. If I stay with this machine, it might be time for a new graphics card. Thanks for your response.

waltkerr,

Integrated GeForce2 graphics and 96.43.xx series drivers don't work together. I have asus a7n266 mobo with GeForce2 Integrated GPU and it has NEVER worked correctly with the 96.43.xx series drivers. What does work is the 71.86.xx series drivers. But there is a problem,
Ubuntu 8.10 is not compatible. I have been waiting before upgrading my Ubuntu box from 8.04 to 8.10 until nVidia fix the 71.86.xx driver to work with 8.10.
