Talking Re: GF8200 / Poor 2D performance / ETA of fix?

Right, so I'll be sticking to 173.14.12, no desktop effects (I have no use for them anyway), and these settings in xorg.conf, which seem to fix the scrolling corruption (not really sure why):

Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Option "PixmapCacheSize" "300000"
	Option "OnDemandVBlankInterrupts" "True"
	Driver	"nvidia"
	Option	"NoLogo"	"True"
EndSection
IPP is 1, GC is 0, and I didn't touch them in this session (no startup script with these two anywhere).

Status with the 173 driver:
  • Youtube, Standard Quality, windowed + fullscreen: great, low CPU usage
  • Youtube, High Quality, windowed + fullscreen: great
  • Youtube, HD, windowed + fullscreen: excellent
  • Scrolling up and down in my browser: no corruption whatsoever (fingers crossed, hope it lasts)
  • This: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40236.html?type=flv: perfect
  • Canvas test: http://intertwingly.net/stories/2006...oseTiling.html": horrible. But who cares? Seems to be the only thing that doesn't go wrong in 173 right now, and the only thing right in later versions. I'll compromise on that.
  • Adanaxis (3D space shooting game): great, at native LCD resolution, with high details
  • BusRate: empty string

IPP=2 should fix this

Yep, that did it. Now all I have to do is wait for nVidia to get their act together and release some drivers that work equally well so I can give VDPAU a proper try.

On an AGP system this refers to the AGP speed factor. I think unter PCIe there is something similar. I fthe problem sits here, memory operations from and to the card are 16 times slower then they should be (assuming PCIe has factor 16 like it shows on my GF 7950GT)

I hope Aaron finds time to confirm or deny my guessing.

Some feedback; 180.29 has corrected my flash video playback performance issue. This update is much appreciated here.

I'm using an nVidia nForce 750a chipset motherboard. I guess it's the same chip as the 8200?

Installed 180.29, on 8300 IGP

Flash works great
FIrefox tab switching performance same as VESA now
Problems I had with xv video stuttering if using firefox extensively at same time is gone.
Other 2d issues seem to be gone as well

Pretty much all my major problems seem to be resolved with this driver
Thanks Nvidia.

I haven't tried dual screen yet, but have kind of got used to using one screen and liking it more than the dual screen.

The new driver has cleared up all the 2D issues I had, the machine is actually usable now. So thanks to Aaron for that.

OpenGL benchmarks are still terrible, 30% below the figures from a 5 year old, embedded 6200 TC. This is disappointing since I never expected an IGP to have stunning performance compared to a discrete GPU, but I'd expected it would at least match performance and maybe achieve a 10% edge over the older kit.

However I've heard that this might not be a driver issue, that the 8200 just lacks the power.
