Hello,
I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 x64, I installed 180.18 and got it to work after several attempts. It was working fine, but this morning the installation has been corrupted. When the system tries to load nVidia modules I have a dialog box saying that it is unable to load libwfb.so Here is what dmesg says : Code:
[ 29.721420] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 180.18, but [ 29.721421] NVRM: this kernel module has the version 177.80. Please [ 29.721422] NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver [ 29.721423] NVRM: components have the same version. What changed ? I accepted some upgrades amongst which : - pulseaudio - cups - xserver-xorg-ati - xserver-xorg-radeon I though the xserver-xorg-ati & radeon wouldn't interfere, but it's my best guest so far. I tried to Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and reinstall 180.18 but got the same error. I did also try to go reinstall the "official" driver that comes with the distro: 177.80, but the installation fails. Do you have any suggestion on how to repair ? I'll like, at least to be able to run the 177.80 again (is there an un-install of 180.18 ?), and if possible the 180.18 that worked fine for me. What I didn't do yet: look at installer log, but installation ended saying "everything is OK!" |

you have to remove the ubuntu packages
check with "dpkg -l|grep nvidia" what is installed or install the new packages for ubuntu from my ppa https://launchpad.net/~thomas-creutz/+archive |

You might have leftovers from old installations.
These are things that might happen when using unsupported packages or even installing by hand under ubuntu. You should not do that, except when you now 100% what you are doing. You can use the locate (updatedb first) or find command to check your filesystem for old kernel modules (nvidia*.ko) and glx libraries (.so). Fuchs |

You're definitely right !
I had "leftovers" from things I did manually. After un-installing (option --uninstall) I was still unable to install back the standard Ubuntu package. It was complaining about 2 symbolic links : libwfb.so (I deleted the symbolic link) and something like libmesa. The link was broken pointing to an unexisting 180.18. So I made the link correct. Now I'm back with 177.80 and it works fine. ThomasC, I'll like to use your packages before I reinstall 180.18, because at least with packages you have the list of files that are supposed to be on the system, and if something goes wrong you can check them manually. Do you have x64 on your repo, and what's the exact name of the package. I'll also do a full copy of my / (from a Wubi install) to be sure, in case something goes wrong ! Many thanks to all of you ! [Edit] I checked the list, x64 is in. What should we need : nvidia-glx-180_180.18-0ubuntu0~ppa2~intrepid1_amd64.deb nvidia-180-modaliases_180.18-0ubuntu0~ppa2~intrepid1_amd64.deb (?) (assuming I don't need sources nor the 180-dev driver) Something else ? Or is there a meta package ? |

all what is need will be installed when you run
Code:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-180 when it is installed you have to run Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/dkms_autoinstaller start Code:
* Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.27-9-generic * nvidia (180.18)... [ OK ] |

I tried to manually delete, reinstall and then purge, but it does not work.
I can only install after 180.18 |

Thanks ThomasC.
So -1) Add your launchpad address to Synpatic -2) sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-180 -3) run the dkms (I though this last step was optionnal as it is done at startup, but it is certainly a good option to run it just after install to check that all is right). I'll try that as soon as I have had time to make my backups. |

Many thanks ThomasC!
I had time to do a backup (partimage) and tried your repository. In fact I added it straight to synaptic, and installed from synaptic. It works fine, splendid work! ![]() (It does the dkms by itself during install). I was just puzzled about the nVidia-settings as I watched synaptic do it's job, it shows a version 177.78. But when I rebooted and launched the settings utility it's fine and says that driver 180.18 is installed. Now I'm just wondering: -1) will you upgrade your repository to 180.22 "stable" ? -2) will it be in "official" Intrepid backports ? [As I assume it'll be the official nVidia version for Jaunty] |
