All others: Thanks for the useful comments.
Regressions really should be handled with priority.

Although desktop effects are wideley used nowadays, I fail to see why they should render a workstation useless.
I see it's annoying for those who got used to it on better working driver releases. So I agree with the regression point.

I would hardly call the shadowing that vista does "3D"

In fact I have been doing such simple things as shadowing for years in KDE.

AS for the latest drivers. They rock. KDE4.1 effects are smooth as glass.

I'm using X86_64 Fedora with a GeForce 7900 (G71 [GeForce 7900 GT/GTO] [10DE:291]) and have not been able to use the NVidia driver since Fedora 9. I tried every kernel parameter, updating BIOS, turning off shared IRQ like sound/net/firewire, NVreg_UseVBios=0, etc,etc,etc. I tried many times.

This driver works.

Thank You NVidia!

Code:
nvidia-settings -a GlyphCache=0

OK, I installed 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.22-pkg1.run' on Ubuntu 8.04.1, but reverted back to 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.82-pkg1.run'.

Apps seemed noticeably slower, and the desktop just seemed sluggish compared to the previous driver.

With 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.82-pkg1.run' all seems snappy and fast.

FWIW:

$ lspci

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)
(...)
$

$ uname -r
2.6.24-23-generic
$
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just my two cents.

i just noticed that the screen pixmap corruption seems to occurs much more on kde/kwin4 than on compiz.
Can some of you try to confirm this please?

A important (IMHO) suggest:
Why nVidia don't change a default setting of VBlank to enabled?
The VBlank off, cause many problems with videos tearing... and for not expert people is difficult try the workaround (check http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?p=1894576).

nVidia 180.22 driver seem to be stable for me.
Ubuntu 8.10 x64, Zotac 8800 GT AMP!, Q6600@3.2GHz, P5Q Deluxe bios 1702.
