Default Re: "stable" 180.22 driver breaks X start

I have the same problem with a 9800 GX2 on openSUSE 11.1. But there is a workaround that allows me to use the 180.22 driver:
  1. Boot into runlevel 3.
  2. Log in as root.
  3. Install the 180.18 driver.
  4. Switch to runlevel 5 -> X starts and the login screen appears.
  5. Switch to runlevel 3 again.
  6. Install the 180.22 driver.
  7. Switch to runlevel 5 again -> X starts and the login screen appears. X is now running on 180.22.
X on 180.22 still works after suspend to disk. Thus I don't have to repeat the installation procedure whenever I start the computer.

Default Re: "stable" 180.22 driver breaks X start

I have the same problem with NVS290 and 180.22. What happens is that soon
after reboot the keyboard locks up and X starts to use 100% of cpu. The mouse
keeps working. Sometimes I can login and keyboard locks immediately after
again with 100% cpu usage and mouse working fine. I am using Fedora 9+updates
and KDE/KDM 4.1.4.

Solution (like above):

Boot into init level 3.
Login as root
Issue command "init 5"

which starts X/kdm login screen and everything works fine....a race condition?

- reboot
- X freeze
- reboot, init 3
- nvidia-bug-report.sh
- uninstall 180.25

Thanks, 180.25 on openSUSE 11.1 with 8400GS KDE 4.1.3 sorted it.

On mine it would freeze with the Nvidia logo on screen.

Steve.

Well well, after a month or two after reporting this issue, I can gladly say that this issue is now RESOLVED for me.

When the driver 180.27 did not work for me, I went in search of some other resolution.

In short, it was in fact the XFX card - I had to flash the BIOS on it. Interestingly, prior to this BIOS flash, I was also unable to update to the latest Windows drivers after 180.**. The latest Windows driver is 181.22, and works, following the BIOS update.

AaronP, I'm not sure if you'd want to follow this up with XFX or not?

I have detailed my experience, and also my resolution on its own page, it was too long for a forum post.

For details of the resolution, see this link:
