That's not really true. It totally depends on the game, especially with SLI.

I would be going from an 8800GTX to a GTX285
Same here, I've got my 285 upgrading from an 8800 Ultra. Very pleased with it, it's very much faster and silent. I was worried about noise before getting it but it's as quiet as the 8800 was 3DMarkVantage went up to 14000 from 9500 on the 8800, temperatures have been maximum 80C working hard |

I will be going from a 8800GT 512Mb to a GTX285 so that will be a nice jump and are pretty much what I need for my 24mon, my old card is long overdue.
My Q6600@ 3.4Ghz and fast 4GB OCZ ram will handle it perfectly I think ![]() |

Core 2 Duo E6700 (stock 2.66GHz) at 3.33GHz
Temperature noted was from Rivatuner's log btw, with 'Ambient' at 49C Ambient here must mean 'Inside case' rather than the standard interpretation 'Room temperature' during tests. Sounds about right, the CPU is around 40C idling with ambient 20C |

I got the XFX GTX285. Runs great. Unfortunately it has the dreaded squealing. Anyone else have it with their 285? I'm wondering if it might be worth getting a replacement, although there's a chance a replacement might wind up doing the same thing.

There should be. My power supply is a Thermaltake Tough Power 700w modular. I'm going to mess around with the power cables and where they are plugged into on the supply and see if that affects anything.

It's absolutely true and you're wrong. There are MANY cases where a 3.15GHz CPU just isn't enough to keep a high end GPU like the 285 maxed out. SLI doesn't change anything other than making my point even more true. The more graphics power you have, the less likely you can get a CPU to keep the GPU's busy. |
