Default Flickering and locked up screen w/ 8600M GT & 180.11

I was in Firefox (3.04) when I noticed that switching to a certain tab made the screen flicker. There was also what looked like some cached graphics or w/e you call it in part of the page. Then the flickering started happening in other tabbed pages. Then... it locked up. I couldn't switch to the CLI or anything. I had to shut it down hard (hold power button). Any clue on what happened? I don't know if bugreport.sh or anything would be any help since the problem is not happening right now. I'm wondering if using VDPAU had anything to do with this like maybe graphics RAM.

Computer Model: Dell Vostro 1500
Graphics Card: nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512 MB
Graphics Card Driver: 180.11 Beta (X86)
Time Using Driver: A little less than a day
Linux Kernel Version: 2.6.27
GNU/Linux Distro: Arch Linux

EDIT: I was using Metacity. Also... when it locked up the screen looked normal (besides a small area of graphic corruption) but nothing could be moved, done or anything

Same card, same problem. I get the crashes within minutes of desktop/browser use. I'm also running a VMWare virtual machine. Back to stable drivers. All of the 180.xx betas have given me this problem.

I get texture corruption on my 8600mgt with the 180.xx drivers in compiz (usually desktop and reflection textures); once it even happened with metacity, sometimes the screen locks up as well.

same with 8800 gtx, with all the 180 serie, but less frequent with 180.08 and 180.11
always flickering before, just have to do ctrl+alt+bcksp in the second after (really one !) and never click anywhere because it turned in the instant to an unrecoverable freeze.

sometimes it hangs and 10 sec later say to me that composite has been deactivated because too slow.

it's more frequent with some windows style like bespin, and always if some flash animation is in firefox.

Happened again, but this time the whole screen looked messed up and when I waited a little longer than before I was logged out of GNOME (could be because I was pressing ctrl alt backpace but I don't think so). Also... I could move my cursor this time. A lot of people talk about Flash maybe causing the crashes and as you can see I was on a webpage that used Flash.

Exactly the same bug for me, with nVidia 8600M GT, Ubuntu Linux 8.10 (kernel 2.6.27), and drivers 180.06 and 180.11.

you right, don't have flash animations in firefox don't totaly prevent from a freeze bug, sometimes just focus on another windows and the bug comes... it's strange, because before the 180 (and previous version too) series, when i was on a window and made a right click on the desktop, the computer hang for 10sec, now it freeze....

Still happens with 180.16, there was no flash content on the web page I was on.
