Default Problems with XvMC, FX 5200 and my personal sanity :-)

I've been trying to build a PVR box using 1.5GHz Via nano-ITX board with a NVIDIA PCI FX 5200 card (I couldn't get OpenChrome to work nicely with the Via board).

Whilst the video works great for standard stuff - 2D/3D acceleration etc, I'm having problems with watching DVDs and DVB-T (MPEG-2 stuff) - the symptom is the CPU flatlines - cooking between 65-80% and prone to frame drops, etc.

Sounds like XvMC isn't working, doesn't it? Well, after pouring through the logs and configs, it seems the XvMC loads OK, and running xine with xxmc also works - but the CPU is still really busy, and running with debug options set in the driver also doesn't throw anything up...

I found some code over at the MythTV wiki which outputs details about the XvMC capabilities with the worrying indication that only MPEG-1 acceleration seems to be supported on the driver/board. No MPEG-2 capabilities were found...

So, attached is the bug report and the output from the XvMC disgnostic utility (test.txt).

Any ideas would be welcome... since I'm completely out of them now.
