Default GeForce 8600GT in Ubuntu 8.10

I have been experiencing major difficulties with getting the Nvidia driver installed for my card in Ubuntu 8.10. Here is a brief summary of the things I have tried:

1. Using the Restricted Drivers Manager in Ubuntu to install the nvidia driver. This results in a black screen at boot.
2. Install the nvidia drivers the manual way. Same result.

My system is pretty standard as far as hardware. It is a Velocity Micro ProMagix with a GeForce 8600GT. Vista is also installed on this system and the card works fine. Here is a link to my post on the Ubuntu Forums, no resolution yet.

I would really like to get this issue resolved so if someone could help me figure it out I would be very grateful! Thanks.
