all depends on budget and needs

performance wise

lowest
4870
285
4870x2
295
highest

but since 4870x2 and 295 are dual GPU solutions, i'm not to keen on those.

personally I would pick 285, your decision might depend on budget, if you can't afford 285 go for 4870, if you can afford 285 or more and don't care about the possible dual GPU issues then 295

Going SLI also ruins the point, if you plan on going SLI you might as well just get a dual GPU solution, its cheaper and it offers the same performance.

That would be very correct, you can find the 285 for about 400, the 280 for about 300, and the 4870 for as low as 200. Personally I'd go for the 4870, much better p/p ratio than both.

I would say, either get the GTX 280 (most bang for the buck at $300) or the GTX 295 (most bang). If you can find a 4870x2 for $400, that is also a lot of bang for the buck.
