It's easy to forget something like that because DX10 does not run on XP, but 9, 8, 7 did.

But even better is the fact that playing the newest games on Vista will continue for years to come.

And if Vista SP2, and SP3 improve the OS as well as XP's SP1, and SP2 did then we'll have DX11, and DX12 on Vista. (Eventually Crysis will be brought to it's knees while still running Vista; just like Far Cry was on XP.)

Yea, but I don't remember it taking hardware this ferkin long to just barely get under Far Cry's nails, like it is with Crysis.

Still even with Tri-SLI 280's O/C'd to hell and back or Quad-SLI 295's crysis is still just barely playable. Especially if you equate any AA/AF...

hm

that's weird that the fps just drops such a huge amount at 2500x..

what's the limiting factor? there's gotta be one specific thing that's
the cause..

Tells me that Crysis isn't coded all that well. The fact they made that engine run like garbage on 2-4 times the top of the line card says they missed the ball.

The fact that Crysis after one and a half year is the best graphical game should tell you more . Crysis runs great for what it's offering

QFT.

I don't fathom how people can claim Crysis is poorly coded when to date there isn't a single game that can rival it in regards to visual realism. And no, I'm not referring to art style at all but specifically how realistic the game *can* look.

And I don't think there will be a game to rival it anytime soon.

That said, I do think that the GTX380, if it is indeed a completely new architecture, will be the first single card to allow you to 100% max the in-game settings in Crysis while maintaining reasonable framerates. I have no proof of this, it is merely a hunch that I have.

as someone else said running out of VRAM is certainly an issue at those resolutions with AA enabled, but also consider that 2560x1600 is basically twice the amount of pixels as 1920x1200. so it's no wonder performance drops by nearly half. the GTX295 SLI numbers are a notable exception, because then you're talking about 4-way SLI and that's notoriously inefficient

Sorry but I have to disagree... I understand the concept of having a graphical engine that can scale over time but with a Shooter with limited replayability I don't think it hit the mark. Here we are after it's release and even with the very highest end 3X SLI just now being able to run it at a decent frame rate.

COD4 while limited in terms of it's engine compared does an excellent job even with average hardware.

Pretty simple it runs like garbage. Even at the time of it's released $1200 worth of GPUs and the top of the line CPUs didn't run it at a decent frame rate. Was it playable? Yes but most people had to turn down the settings to get it to run at a playble FPS.

I'm an FPS wh0re and I was generally satisfied with the performance I got in Crysis on an 8800GTX with the rig I'm using now. I ran it at high settings in DX9 mode at 1440x1080 and it looked good and was totally playable. My framerates were between 35 and 50 most of the time.

Sure, I'd like for it to run at 80fps constant at max settings in DX10, but that just isn't going to happen for a while. There are games that look far worse and are far less impressive technically than DX9 Crysis that don't run much different.
