I'm running the 180.22 driver, but it's still not as smooth as I'd like, I googled around trying to find some "official" info on what to put in kwin's window, aka compositing type etc.
I also found "KWIN_NVIDIA_HACK" (an export to put in .profile) that I hadn't heard of before. Anyone got any recommendations to get a better nvidia experience? (it's especially scrolling and resizing that's annoying, is there any way to disable smooth scrolling and rendering in resize in kde?). |

Gnome ain't bad, but seriously it's a huge step back in terms of functionality.
It would be good to specify your distro. Running KDE 4.2RC1 with a 8600GT on Gentoo and it's running great, smooth. I found multiple problems with my original kernel config. Make sure you have CONFIG_X86_REROUTE_FOR_BROKEN_BOOT_IRQS, CONFIG_SPARSE_IRQ to false. Using TripleBuffering sucks as it adds latency and it makes the system feel laggy when the CPU usage is high. Don't add anything special to your xorg.conf. These drivers work great without any special config. The only thing that I am using is BackingStore at true which is only working because I have upgraded to xorg-server 1.5.99.901 (1.6RC1). Before all this the performance was ugly at best. |

I actually switched to KDE4 from gnome right before running into these issues, as a developer working with both GTK and Qt I know how superior the Qt libraries are to GTK, and pushing for a complete modern redesign in KDE4 was a big risk, but with KDE4.2 it's starting to show.

KDE4 with nvidia driver is not going very well, and I suppose there's no tweaks at the moment.

You don't need any tweaks. It works fine with the default settings.
KWIN_NVIDIA_HACK is not needed as it is enabled by default in kwin Backingstore isn't really needed esp. as Qt has its own backingstore Quote:
@mrn: can you tell us what distro and gfx card you're using? |

Works fine here with the lastest stable 64 bit driver using my onboard nvidia card.

You should check out a thread called "180.* graphical corruption and freezes system" -- it's in the very same forum that this thread is in. I suppose you want to accuse everyone (still!) posting in that thread of making it all up? |

yeah, but is it slower than a gtk app? If both are the same or Qt is faster then there isn't much you can do about it. Hopefully with Qt 4.5 and the raster backend things will be flying |
