txf is it a lie???
What the hell are you writing, can you understand English language?
I wrote that "is not going very well", and that's not a lie, maybe you are talking stupid, that couldn't be a lie.

yeah, but is it slower than a gtk app?
For me, on Ubuntu 8.10 && Nvidia 9400M && 180.22 && KDE 4.2 RC, absolutely yes. I have problems with resize, maximize and unminimize.

Well it's not really comparable, resizing without effects is fine, and with compiz it didn't repaint the window as I resized.

OK, but in general he asked a good question:

Which settings in the KDE 4 (4.2 here) advanced desktop effects settings are the best?

Composing type for sure is OpenGL.

But then OpenGL mode: There are "Texture From Pixmap", "Shared Memory" or "Fallback", what to select for best experience with Nvidia?

And then there is "enabled direct rendering" and "use vsync" should i enabled those?.

And how big is the impact of an better texture filter (there are 3 options).

Anyone with some recommendations for that?

do you have powermizer disabled? Is it slow or is it laggy?

have you played around with the kwin advanced settings, like disabling vsync or switching direct rendering? What is it like when you're using the xrender backend?

oh, and I assume you're not using the glowing transparent box resizing when using compiz.

TFP is the best option as it uses the glx extension to create textures in an accelerated way
Shared mem is less good and the last time I tried it worked badly, lots of corruption
Fallback, I dunno, never used it. I assume it is the worst

You should enable direct rendering, otherwise things like videos and heavy effect usage will consume a ton of cpu power (essentially it enables indirect rendering). However, I have noticed that many effects are a LOT smoother when direct rendering is unchecked (but they work fine with direct too), there are several reasons why this could be. Also with indirect rendering you will see really bad stuttering and blocking if you're doing cpu intensive tasks.

Vsync....sigh...Basically disabling vsync will make effects smoother, but will introduce tearing, most notably in videos that aren't running fullscreen.

The different filtering is up to you. I always keep it bilinear, as trilinear makes very little visible difference and you pay for it heavily depending on your gfx card (only on large browser windows in my case). If you have a beefy card it shouldn't be a problem.

Ultimately you have to play around with those settings so see what you're most comfortable with.

resizing seems to be about the same for me regardless of settings, xrender/opengl/with or without direct rendering. I'll just stick with what I standard settings, it's an eyecandy annoyance, nothing more.

Powerminizer is not disabled. Problems:
- unminimize and maximize: the window is gray for 1-2 seconds (it's not fluid)
- resize: the contents of the windows is risezed with lag

try disabling it.Search this forum to find out how...

Beware of overheating

Personally I have it disabled as everything is horribly laggy otherwise

something is wrong as it isn't slow here. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful. What sort of framerate are you getting?

locked to 60 (with vsync on), as soon as I start resizing a window it drops to 2-3, pulling a window around however (with wobbly on, and transparancy) and it's on 60.

and you say that even if you disable vsync, it drops to 2,3? For me with vsync it drops to ~40fps. Without vsync the fps counter remains maxed at 100fps...Nope I'm lying, it can drop down all the way to 50, but it remains smooth.

Turned off vsync, now the thing is showing locked to 100fps instead, dragging windows around very activly can drop it to 80, resizing a window and it's down to 2 again. What Qt version are you running? I know they are improving atleast xrender in 4.5.
