Seriously, this stuff is only meant for Windows use, if you were expecting to run linux on this machine you shouldn't have bought a model with a hybrid config. I know it sucks but that's just the way of this world and an artifact of having closed source drivers. Good luck!

Damn, I hate the type of reasoning!

I don't own a hybrid laptop, but comments like this just makes me mad. With this kind of attitude Linux would never have become a reality in the first place. It's about time we make the hardware vendors realize we don't tolerate this winblows-only BS. Accepting the M$ monopoly and blaming the users for not being able to run their favorite OS is wrong!

In time (hopefully sooner than later) I'm sure the community will make progress on this issue. And possibly this feature will end up working better on Linux than winblows some time in the future.

Don't underestimate the abilities of a bunch of pi$$ed off OSS developers, they have been known to produce miracles with so-called winblows-only hardware (soft-modems anyone?).

Sorry for the rant, but it's been a ****ty morning and I just had to let out some steam.

Regardless of if you're willing to accept the dominance of Windows it's here now and it's here to stay. It's sound business practice for companies to nVidia to dictate their driver support to the widest possible user base.

This is a recurring theme for linux. New hardware takes a while before you get stable drivers for a multitude of reasons. A lot of this technology is proprietary and until the companies release the engineering info and open source drivers become available you have to approach new business decisions (like buying a fancy expensive laptop) realistically if you're comitted to running linux only.

Don't get me worng, I am a linux and windows user myself. I wish the programs which are important to me all ran in Linux: such as Photoshop mainly. Sadly they don't and getting them to work through Wine doesn't cut it for me.

Hi all,

I would like to ask all users who have a nvidia hybridpower or an ATI PowerXpress laptop to provide the DSDT information for comparison among different models and vendors. We have found a half-baked solution for the Sony Vaios but this may need tweaking for other laptop models:

Using linux, Install if you haven't already the acpidump and iasl tools:
sudo apt-get install acpidump iasl # on Debian-based systems

Then run the following commands:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt
sudo acpixtract acpidump.txt
iasl -d DSDT.dat

This will create a DSDT.dsl file that you can attach in a reply to this thread.

Thanks,

Albert.

Hi,

Does anybody know of any more laptops that have hybrid graphics?

This is the list I've compiled so far:

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo XI 3650 (nvidia)
BenQ Joybook S42 (nvidia)
Lenovo ThinkPad T500 (ati)
Lenovo ThinkPad T400 (ati)
ASUS M51Ta (ati)
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Sa 3650 (ati)
MSI PX211 12'' (ati)

My Dell Studio XPS 13 has:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9200M GS (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9400M G (rev b1)

I'd be happy if I was able to power down the 9200, I don't actually care about SLI. I have only been able to get X to use the 9400. When I purchased this laptop they had just been released in Australia, and I couldn't buy one without hybrid SLI.

DSDT.dsl is attached.

Thank you very much. I've added the DSDT table to:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756

Yours is the first laptop with nvidia+nvidia configuration that I've got. Most of the others are intel+nvidia or intel+ati. Let's see what the bug's owners can say about your laptop.

We've got 7 different laptops with Linux Hybrid Graphics DSDT table information so far, but still need info for a lot more of them. Please contribute to see fully featured hybrid graphics capabilities in Linux as soon as possible:

DSDT is an acronym for Differentiated System Description Table. This table contains the Differentiated Definition Block, which supplies the information and configuration information about the base system. It is always inserted into the ACPI Namespace by the OS at boot time.

If you've got a laptop with a IGP and a hybrid Nvidia or ATi card, and you have tried to use Linux on it, you may have noticed that there are issues with the hybrid graphics setup. To help improve the Linux hybrid graphics support for this laptop, please attach your DSDT information to this Launchpad bug report specifying your laptop model:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756

To compile your DSDT information, install if you haven't already the acpidump and iasl tools:
sudo apt-get install acpidump iasl # on Debian-based systems

Then run the following commands:

sudo acpidump > acpidump.txt
sudo acpixtract acpidump.txt
iasl -d DSDT.dat

This will create a DSDT.dsl file that you can attach to the bug report. This information will allow the developers to fully implement the hybrid graphics features for Linux.
