If you comment out the NvAGP Option in xorg.conf, and let the driver decide, ALL four of the 180.xx driver revs disable AGP and default to PCI mode.
I have different behaviour. 180.29 and 180.35 enable AGP with NvAGP commented out.

I have the same problem with a 7600GS, AGP 4x (sigh), and 180.29 or 180.35.

glxgears with no Gnome desktop effects: 4096 fps
glxgears with Gnome desktop effects: 2 fps

The same machine, using a 5600LE AGP 4x card, and 173.14.16

glxgears with no Gnome desktop effects: 2256 fps
glxgears with Gnome desktop effects: 1330 fps

options when running the 7600GS card:
Option "PixmapCache" "true"
Option "PixmapCacheRoundSizeKB" "1024"
Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "0"

Other than that, the xorg.conf files are identical.

I just discovered that disabling the DAMAGE extension in the xorg.conf file fixes OpenGL in KDE4 with compositing disabled.

180.37 fixed this issue.

Yup, 180.37 works fine with NvAGP="1" in xorg.conf, AGP is enabled & OpenGL apps work.

Still defaults to PCI mode if I comment out the nvagp line though, which is odd.

Yep, that is odd. 180.37 seems to have fixed a lot of problems with my 7600GS on AGP.

Without any line in my xorg.conf file for AGP I get:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled

I wish fast writes and SBA were enabled. When I boot this machine into Windows/XP Professional, I get fast writes and SBA enabled.

According to this, they should be available in Linux as well.

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000217:0x1f000104

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/host-bridge
Host Bridge: PCI device 8086:2530
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000217:0x00000104

Other than that, I think I've pretty well reached the performance limit this machine.

Have a look at this - Fast Writes were disabled for me, got it fixed now. Don't know how much worth it is, and may cause instability.
