Angry Re: F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Official Thread!

I went ahead and bought FEAR 2 and the extra DLC yesterday. Still waiting for it to download. It goes at 1.8 MB/s for a little while, then switches to "download starting..." and hangs there until I restart Steam and try again. This after it said it was 100% Ready, last night....

I HATE Steam.

Bummer. That's why the vast majority of ISPs here have their own Steam mirrors. ::

I HATE Steam.
When it says "download starting" for a while, just try and launch the game... that usually shows the percentage again. Usually it is actually downloading when it says that, it just never shows the status for some reason.

Yeah, I found that. Looked like it had frozen, but my G15 showed web usage that matched my usual Steam download.

Yeah, I also found that pausing it then going in and setting it to "always keep updated" gets it going again too. Finally got it all done and playable...14.6 Gigs! Dayum!

I swore I'd never buy this due to the Steam requirement, but bah...I loved FEAR 1, I have a Steam account for Half Life 2 anyway, and 1/2 price...why not.

I just really, REALLY hate games with a leash. One day Valve will go out of business, abandon Steam for something new, get bought in a hostile takeover, whatever, and all those games will be rendered into so many useless bytes of data. Not to mention I can not install and play whenever, wherever I want even if I do back it all up to DVDs after having offline mode working...it will still want to go online at least once before enabling offline mode again later.

I restarted Steam, restarted my PC, my router, my cable modem. Put it in online, offline mode, then back. Toggled the "keep this/don't keep this game updated" thing. Nothing works. Clean install of Windows Vista 64 SP2, just installed Steam last night, and this one game on it only. I had it up and running a few hours ago, just enough to test that it would load and set up the graphics...went to eat, come back to relax and play and nothing!

THIS....is why I friggin hate Steam and all other forms of broke d1ck POS DRM. This is why so many people . Better protuct at 100% discount price.

The Steam error fixed itself somehow finally, after all the usual stuff like renaming clientwhatever.blob and removing read only attributes etc failed.

Excellent game so far. I still haven't completed the regular part so can't comment on the new DLC expansion part yet.

Decided to grab the DLC after all, $5 is tough to resist.

Have to say I'm pretty impressed, it has some great action, and a decent insight into what looked like a huge, gaping hole in the story between 1 and 2. Worth it.
