I just bought a PC RTS game. I expect to be able to pick any available nickname for playing online multiplayer that I want. This is not the case.

You see, you have to log into a "Games For Windows Live" account to even start the game. I tried making a new account, but my email was already tied up to an Xbox360 Live account (!!!). I never use my Xbox360 anymore and thus I was forced to log on and use my old nickname unless I wanted to create a new account on a different email address (which I don't). Can I change the online nickname or anything ingame? No. You have that one account/nickname, so no chance of smurfing, which is fine with me. But I can't change the name. To do so, I read in a FAQ, I have to use an Xbox360 connected to the internet and log in with that gamertag and pay 800 MS points / 10$ to change the gamertag name. What. The. ****.

Now I'm stuck with using an old nickname both in multiplayer in my new PC RTS in 2009 because of my Xbox360 gaming years ago in 2006/2007. That is not cool.

Of course it wouldn't be a problem if I had picked my usual nickname when I made my Xbox360 Live Account. However because I used "Gaco" on XBL on the Xbox1 and cancelled my subscription before getting an Xbox360 years later, that nickname was apparently frozen, lost in no-mans-land. I wasn't allowed to use it again because it was already in their system, but no one was allowed to use it anyway because the subscription was cancelled.

Sigh microsoft, deep sigh... I have to say that Valve is doing so much better with Steam than Microsoft is with Games For Windows Live. It's like GFWL is a money machine, trying to make you buy you extra content etc. Steam, on the other hand, feels like a service to the PC Gamer.
No offense, but... wow... talk about a nitpick.

First of all, well it could be made easier indeed.

But personally, I had more hassle installing and fixing a Steam account for DoW II than GFWL. As I didn't run Steam before I had to install and fix an account which took some time. But with GFWL setup before I bought DoW II, it was just login inside the game and start getting achivements playing. No problems for me.

Personally I'm not that impressed with the Steam client. It uses a custom UI that I don't like, and there where some stuff that could be better. But well it doesn't take that much memory minimized and I guess I have to get used to games using it.

I got all that and more for pre-ordering from gamestop.

BTW, is it true that if you rank up online you get better looking armor for your units? I don't understand how it works exactly, but I know you can get better armor and crap.

Not being able to freely choose ny nickname in an online RTS? Yes that bothers me..

Not the end of the world for me, just not very well thought-through.

Well the whole point of Live, and even Steam, is to have one identity carry-over through all your games, which I think most people agree is really cool. You being annoyed comes from not being able to pick your normal name, which I agree is annoying, but not that big a deal at all. Happens all the time, really.

Add on top of that you could have solved the problem by signing up for a new, free windows ID, which would take about 2 minutes.

I have been ignoring this game intentionally... loved the original and I just don't have the time to get into this one... I have so much to play that I just can't see myself ever getting around to it.

Yeah, I think it is a 9+ masterpiece of a game, a true hybrid of genres that should appeal to the hardcore and rookie alike, but... man, I just have too much crap to play right now.

I should really wait to buy games until they're cheaper, since it takes me so long to beat them anyway, but I like supporting developers with day one sales since I have the money, and this is my only hobby.

I agree that the same identity carry-over through all games is cool.
But I want the FREEDOM to change it.

And how much more difficult to implement this displayed nickname and real username into GFWL and Steam?

Steam works nothing like GFWL, you can change your nickname on steam at any time regardless if it's already taken and for free.

A unique "gamertag" is fine, but the automatic carry over from Xbox360 is so poorly thought through. As I said I haven't played on XBL for years and due to another MS ****up I could not get the nickname I wanted at that time (even though it was not taken), so I made a silly nickname that I do not use anymore. It's the automatic link to the Xbox world which I have no control over I'm annoyed about and the inability to change it.

I don't know what you mean by creating a new windows ID, if you mean creating a new email address, that is obviously not a very conveniently solution, especially not in the long run. If you know something I don't then spill the beans

You can make a new windows ID through hotmail and get a new gamertag with it... you don't actually need to use that windows ID as an email, and can indeed set another email as your Live! contact email.

I was going to make a seperate gamertag for my PC games, but forgot...

I agree it's an awesome game. One of the things I love is it doesn't replace DOW1 so so now I play 1 and 2 side by side. :: One for base building, one for Micro. ::
