nForce2 - which /dev's should I be using

Hi There.

Just opgraded to the new nforce drivers.

Before the upgrade I was using the standard i810 stuff - worked fine just out of the box - well after I changed the permissions on stuff like /dev/dsp and set up the module aliases.

The nvnet stuff also worked.

I upgraded so that I could get SPDIF support and indeed I have it - 6 channels too!!!

Now the module is loaded

So everything looks good, until I start up GDM and Gnome 2.2

Then when the volume control widget tries to start I get an error

"Couldn't open mixer device /dev/sound/mixer"

now from memory my old set up only used /dev/mixer.

Are there some devices that I need to create to fix this?

One thought does come to mind is that I did partially configure ALSA under the old drivers as when I was running in "vanilla" i810 mode (although patched) I had heard that their drivers woudl work on my hardware and it seemed everyone was using them.

I did de-install them (make uninstall) and purge the packages (I am using Debian) but I wonder if bits, such as where the system should look for sound hardware is, are still hanging around - if this is the case, does anyone know where to look to correct this.

You could try looking for any mixer devices that you do have, and symlinking to it.

find /dev/ -name *mixer*
ln -s /dev/currentmixer /dev/sound/mixer

What motherboard are you using? I've been fighting tooth and nail to get 5.1 audio out of the A7N266-VM. ALSA 0.94, nvaudio.o, both work fine in analog but no IEC958 mixer control in alsamixer, and I haven't figured out how to get AC3 playback with an OSS module like nvaudio.o. Any hints on how to do this with mplayer? My next step is to check out the ALSA CVS and see if any progress has been made on nForce2 SPDIF.
