Default nforce drivers compile help

hi i installed redhat 9 and have been having problems compiling the linux drivers. i read the other posts here which say to have the kernel source rpm installed. well i have kernel version 2.4.20-18.9 and source for -8. ive downloaded the srpm but it wont install. it doesnt give me any errors just it wont install. i must have tried it a million times by now. please help


[root@jasonscomp root]# rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.20-18.9.src.rpm

The kernel.src.rpm isn't the same thing as the kernel-source.rpm. The first one is the file that you can build kernel.rpm from. The second is the actual source.

When you try to install kernel.src.rpm with rpm -ivh, it decompresses it (as a tarball) and puts the resulting tree in /usr/src/RPMS somewhere (or perhaps /sur/src/redhat somewhere, I don't know for sure).

When you install the kernel-source RPM, it puts the real kernel sources in /usr/src/linux-<version>.

Look around in up2date -- it should have the new kernel source if the old one is installed (which it is).

thanks that worked. i guess i didnt understand what the difference was. the drivers work well
