I can get it to boot but the memory is all borked... reading like 80% usage and not working correctly, hanging on restart, etc. Might be ebay-bound...

I thought I made a huge breakthrough when I got it into windows, but it just wasn't stable, and none of the tweaking could get it stable. Really confusing.

I may just try some g skills and see if I have better luck.

Getting an i7 920 tomorrow along with some mushkin cas9 3x2 DDR3-1600 kit and an Asus P6T V2. I opted for the Zalman 9700 w/ socket 1366 mounting brackets as my air cooler (due to ease of installation mostly) and I've heard very good things about it as an i7 cooler.

My plan is to overclock to 3.8GHz (190x20), and leave the RAM at the 8x multiplier to ensure stability and timings. I am aware that I need to set the QPI multiplier lower as well, though I haven't seen the actual BIOS yet to know where that setting would be. Not sure about leaving on Turbo mode either. The rest of the system is in my sig, and I'll be putting it in an Antec 900 case.

Given this, how realistic of an overclock is this? Would keeping Turbo enabled be worth it? What voltages should I probably shoot for off the bat? Keep in mind that although I'm not a complete novice when it comes to overclocking, I'm not terribly comfortable with it. Just looking for a little guidance, it seems like you guys have been very successful. I want this to be a full-time overclock with total stability, which I'm sure can be achieved - I just don't know what frequency it'll be.

3.8 is very doable and Turbo and HT are fine too.

I think I'm gonna start with 160x20 and leave the RAM at 1600. Since this is only a 3.2GHz clock speed, would I need to mess with voltages at this point? If not I'd like to get a feel for how my system temps are, use it as a base, and go from there. If I'd have to up the voltages for this low of an overclock I might be a little less inclined. I don't want to significantly shorten the lifespan of the chip - I'd like to keep it at least two to three years.

I think it would be fine at stock volts at 3.2, and possibly up to 3.4-3.6, depending.

OK, up and running with no problems so far, just got Vista SP1 installed, getting drivers on there now. I'll let you know how it goes. What is a normal idle temp btw? In the BIOS my CPU temp hovers around 35C, though from what I remember BIOS temps tend to be higher than idle.

Edit: OK! Got it stable easily at "auto" for all voltage settings beside the DRAM bus (which I set to 1.55v). Should I leave Speedstep enabled by the way? It doesn't seem to do anything other than lower idle temperatures so I'm inclined to leave it on. Will it disrupt gaming stability? So far I'm using OCCT 3.1 and its been stable with good temps for about 10 minutes now.

Strangely enough, my CPU core temps are showing as slightly lower than with stock clocks.

Good question, I have speedstep off because that's what I did with the Q6600... not sure how it effects things.

Yeah all I've seen so far is that when I'm not doing anything besides web browsing, it lowers the core multiplier a lot. Whenever the CPU is being used, the multiplier is at 21x. I still can't believe how well it's running, totally stable with literally no increase in temps so far. I think I'll push it a little harder later on, but for now I want to see what this GTX 285 can do.

My last experience with overclocking was with an Athlon 64, which was generally unsuccessful with even mild overclocks yielding very high temperatures. Granted I have a better air cooler now but I wasn't expecting it to be so easy this time around.

Would it be a good idea to do a Prime95 "burn-in" overnight? I've heard that helps improve long-term stability.
