Default Speakers/Receiver Question

My once very expensive surround system is now very old and I'm updating it. I don't know squat about this topic and am hoping someone here can help me out.

I've already got my Klipsch speakers - 5 satellites and a 1 sub woofer. Hooked up to my years old Onkyo receiver they do rock. Sound much better than the Yamaha speakers I previously had hooked up.

I ordered this Denon 7.1 channel receiver:

What's the deal with 7.1?
Should I be getting 2 more satellites for this or is this one of those features that like 3 movies actually take advantage of?

If you just ordered it, take it back and get a current year one. That one was discontinued already by Denon and replaced with the 991 version. The 991 version also has a MSRP of only $1000 dollars...far cheaper than the one listed in your link.

For that money, go with the 3311, it is a far superios AVR and STILL cheaper.

Here is the 991

If you can pony the money, the 4311 is FAR surperior to both of them, due to the much more advanced room correct AND the ability to do front heights and wides.

To actually answer your question, you simply select PLIIx and it will automatically matrix all your movies into 7.1. There are few movies which natively support it, but Dolby can make all movies use it...and use it amazingly well.

I have a 6.1 currently and love it.

As a note, studies have shown that front wides are the best bang for the buck, then front heights, then rear surrounds...combined with the standard 5.1 of course. That is why I suggest the 4311.
