Default Advice on Which Windows is Best for my new Hardware

Hi guys,
I got a "new" hardware and I like to get your feedback regarding which OS version might work better on it!

the system is spec is as follow:
2x Xeon 3.2 (single core with HT technology)
4Gb of ram
75 15k SCSI drive
Nvidia Quadro FX 3400

Should I install
1) Vista Ultimate
2) Vista Ultimate x64
3) Vista Business
4) Vista Business x64
5) Windows Server 2008
6) Windows Server 2008 x64
7) If none, which Windows version do you recommend? ( I will have one partition that will run Linux.. so No linux ...lol)

Now I know someone who has installed Vista Ultimate x64 he says the system slows down randomly and that when it comes to games! Like he says sometimes he gets 100fps in Enemy territory and sometimes he gets 3fps, and when this happens he can't even playback a video (720p)....He has installed the latest drivers from Nvidia (Quadro drivers)....

So that is why I'm wondering what I should do....

later on I do want to increase the memory .... and maybe get a new video card..!

This system is going to be used as both gaming system and development system.

Any suggestion would be appreciated

you should actually wait for Windows 7. your hardware is not the latest, and Windows 7 will suit it better. your machine will have no problem running Vista x64, but trust me and wait for Windows 7.

also, your friend has other issues. i run Vista x64 and have played Wolf:ET on it and i never drop below 150FPS.

I agree with ViN. Seems silly to buy Vista now with 7 round the corner, and it is a definite improvement.

The system isn't very good.

I just replaced a dual Xeon 3.0 HT system at work with a Q9300. There is a HUGE difference in performance. Both are running XP. The dual Xeon system was painfully slow. I would compare it's performance to that of my OLD Athlon XP 2.4. Netburst architecture was very very very bad.

My recommendation: Windows 2000

Windows 7 will work much better than vista with lower hardware requirements. Windows 7 will be a better choice over 2000.

XP then. I wouldn't run Vista or 7 on it. Trust me when I say it's crazy slow. It's a Windows 2000 era machine and that's why I suggested it.

Server 2008 is the same basic system as Windows 7 minus some polish.

sorry but that is not correct

server 2008 (was originally released in SP1), is the same core as Vista SP1. Hence the Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 update is the same file. will not be seperate SP2 updates for both systems

Server 2008 R2 also in BETA is the same core as Windows 7

Server 2008 (same core as Vista) is going to be upgraded to Server 2008 R2 (same core as win7)

this is yet another little clue why win7 is called win7, since vista got bad rep upon release.

R2 = release two as in second edition
